Aide says Kim to stay in Korea after retiring

Park Jie-won, the Blue House chief of staff, said yesterday that President Kim Dae-jung would not go abroad for some time after his term of office expires. Mr. Park said President Kim will continue his research at the Kim Dae-jung Peace Foundation, which has recently been taken over by Yonsei University. The foundation is where President Kim worked out his sunshine policy toward the North, but it has also been the source of graft charges that resulted in the conviction of his son.

Mr. Park said he would continue to work for the president, but he had no comment on how President Kim would deal with allegations that the government bribed Pyeongyang to secure the 2000 inter-Korean summit. The Grand National Party wants the prosecutors to ban Mr. Park from traveling abroad until the charges are investigated.
