Web sites foreign to many users

The Ministry of Information and Communication reported Thursday that 70 percent of 82 private and public-sector Web sites provided only limited services to expatriates in Korea. Most Internet sites of government organizations do not recognize alien registration numbers, making it impossible for expatriates to file complaints or make policy proposals. Internet Web sites of corporations, schools and online shopping malls demand foreigners submit alien registration and passport numbers to qualify for Web site membership. Locals only need to present social registration numbers. Some companies do not post procedures for foreigners who want to use their Web sites. The information ministry said it would ask firms to fix such inconveniences.
