Geumgang road tour shut down till August
Overland tours from South Korea to Mount Geumgang are unlikely to resume before August, Unification Ministry officials said yesterday. The land tours were suspended after just three groups made trips in February along a temporary passage through the Demilitarized Zone near the east coast. North Korea requested the suspension, saying the passage was needed to continue work on the inter-Korean railway construction in the area.
A South Korean official said yesterday that North Korea has notified the chairman of Hyundai Asan Corp., Chung Mong-hun, that work on the railway will continue until August. Mr. Chung traveled to the North on March 27. “It will be some time before the land tours will resume,” the official said, adding that Hyundai had requested a speedy conclusion of the work so that the tours could resume.
