Samsung to produce fastest chip
Samsung Electronics Co. announced yesterday that it was ready to mass-produce double data-rate DDR400 dynamic random access memory chips (Drams) for laptop computers for the first time in the world. DDR Drams are double-sided chips that process data twice as fast as ordinary chips for high-speed and graphics-intensive programs. The “400” refers to the chip’s ability to transfer data at 400Mbps (megabits per second), about 20 percent more than the present fastest laptop chips, which transfer at 333Mbps. Products to be mass produced include 1Gb (gigabyte), 512Mb (megabyte) and 256Mb memory chips. They will be fabricated using Samsung’s 0.1-micron processing technology.
