North wants release of cash-summit men

North Korea demanded the immediate release yesterday of Kim Dae-jung administration officials who are now being tried on charges of sending money illegally to the North before the 2000 inter-Korean summit.
The independent counsel team prosecuting the men last week asked the Seoul District Court to impose a five-year prison term on Park Jie-won, a former Blue House chief of staff.
The counsel also asked for prison terms of up to three years for the other officials allegedly involved.
“If South Korea wants reconciliation, unity, peace and unification of the two Koreas, the authorities must withdraw all unreasonable punishment of those involved in the summit and acquit them of all charges,” North Korean officials said on a state-run broadcast media outlet.
