Tech firm gets bid in Malaysia

A joint venture company between Malaysia and Korea named eClip signed Mobile Data Portal Service Provider Agreement with the largest mobile service provider in Malaysia. Industry analysts said the success will pave the way for Korea’s wireless Internet content providers to enter Malaysia, one of the largest markets in Southeast Asia. Trious, an Internet content provider, said yesterday that The JVC, eClip signed a contract with Celcom of Malaysia to construct the company’s wireless Internet portal Web site. It will have rights to run the system for the next five years. The firm will have the right to provide games, ring tones and stock information to cell phone subscribers in Malaysia. eClip will split profits equally with Celcom. Celcom is a state-run mobile phone company with 5 million subscribers. Trious set up operations in Malaysia in 2000 and made JVC, eClip has wooed Celcom since then. “We will complete the wireless Internet system by April,” said Choi Sang-hyeok, president of Trious. The firm said its policy is to “buy Korean” when it snags a foreign contract. It said it is now negotiating with 20 Korean wireless Internet content providers. by Kwon Hyeok-joo
