EXHIBITIONS

ALTERNATIVE SPACE LOOP

To Dec. 30: “Kim Yong-kyoung.” The works of this artist deal with human characteristics, dilemmas and reactions that are examined and played out in a combination of self-projection and self-pity. Ms. Kim seemingly tries to hide in her work, much of which, in this exhibit, consists of sculptures and digital photographs of tall buildings in a big city. The pieces suggest greed and feelings of irritation, the unwarranted infliction of pain on others, nervousness, exhaustion and desire.

HAKGOJAE

To Dec. 2: “Yu-hui-sam-mae.” This commemorative exhibition marks the reopening of Hakgojae, one of the best-known of the many galleries to be found in Insa-dong, central Seoul. The title of the exhibition translates as “absorption in merrymaking.” Under this theme, many paintings by Seonbi, a scholar of the Joseon Dynasty period, are displayed, offering a perspective on Seonbi’s artistic and charming nature. Additionally, paintings that can be seen as continuing in the artist’s style, including works by such artists as Kim Hong-do and Jeong Seonk, are presented; the contemporary artists’ work seem to bring the spirit of Seonbi into the present day.
