Samsung rolls out large organic diode display

Samsung SDI has produced a new digital monitor that processes images at twice the speed and half the electricity consumption that liquid crystal display are capable of. The company announced yesterday that it had developed the first 17-inch organic light-emitting diode monitor. These monitors, now widely used in cellular telephone displays, are only a third the thickness of an LCD monitor. Samsung says it has adapted the technology to a size usable for computer monitors. “Unlike the products that were developed in the early stages, these monitors support all colors and have high response speed. They can support super high-quality moving images,” an official at Samsung said. “The monitors are also much brighter.” The resolution of the monitors is 5.7 megapixels, the highest in the market. “Conventional 17-inch LCD monitors currently on the market are about 1.3 megapixels,” said a clerk at Hi Mart, a large electronics store chain. The monitors will be on display at the 2004 Society for Information Display, the largest international display exposition, which will be taking place in Seattle next week. The products will be available on the market late next year, Samsung said. Last year, the global market share of the organic light-emitting diode panel market was $258 million, according to Display Search, a market research organization. The agency forecast that the market would grow to $500 million this year and to $1.2 billion next year because of increasing demand for higher-speed video support. by Lee Hyun-sang, Wohn Dong-hee
