KT may pursue digital broadcast service
KT, Korea’s fixed-line telecom giant, said yesterday that it may pursue digital mobile broadcasting services. Two months ago, KT withdrew from a consortium for digital satellite broadcasting led by SK Telecom at the last minute. SK Telecom is Korea’s largest mobile telecom company. KT said it has held talks with Japan’s Advanced Space Business Corp. and that it plans to launch a satellite as well. “Later this month, Japanese delegates will come to Korea and we will discuss details on investment and the service itself,” a KT official said. Currently, TU Media Corp., the joint consortium, is preparing to begin commercial service in September. Digital mobile broadcasting is a service enabling users to view television through cellular phones or mobile television sets via satellite transmission.
