LG Philips joins LG to make huge OLED
LG Philips LCD announced yesterday that it will jointly develop the world’s largest organic light-emitting diode, or OLED panels, with LG Electronics. The company said yesterday that the 20.1-inch panels are the largest to be made from a single sheet of glass. Last year, Sony succeeded in developing 24.2-inch OLEDs, but these were made by putting four displays together. LG Philips will design and manufacture the 3-million-pixel displays for LG Electronics products. OLED panels have a faster response time for video and do not need back lighting, so they consume half the power compared to liquid crystal displays or plasma display panels. OLED panels are also lighter and offer increased brightness. An LG official said that the company’s OLED panels will have a greater range of light and dark contrasts, which will make images more lifelike. LG Electronics is not the only Korean company that is interested in these next-generation display panels. Samsung SDI has already developed a 17-inch OLED at resolution of 5.8 million pixels in May. Samsung Electronics also announced in August that it was entering the OLED market. by Lee Hyun-sang, Wohn Dong-hee
