Samsung Electronics starts on 4-gigabit chips

Samsung Electronics began mass production of 4-gigabit NAND flash memory chips using 70-nanometer process technology, the company said yesterday. This design technology enables the firm to produce the smallest memory cell size in the world. The technology also offers larger storage for consumers at lower prices. A 4-gigabit flash memory chip can be used to make an 8-gigabit memory card, which can store up to eight hours of high-quality moving images such as those for DVDs. Hwang Chang-gyu, semiconductor division president, and about 300 Samsung employees gathered at the firm’s factory in Kiheung, Gyeonggi province yesterday to begin running 14 production lines and begin manufacturing 300-millimeter wafers.
