Samsung forum to show latest mobile technologies

Samsung Electronics Co. opens a two-day global forum on new mobile communications technologies today. Gathering on Jeju Island are some of the world’s leading figures in the communications industry, such as Broadcom Corp.’s Co-Chairman Henry Samueli, Open Mobile Alliance Chairman Mark Cataldo and Freescale Semiconductor Inc.’s Chairman Michel Mayer. They will be introduced to Samsung’s latest advances in fourth-generation technologies, including WiBro, which will allow cell phone users to be connected to the Internet while moving at high speed. Samsung plans to present WiBro in an open demonstration using a car and participants on the street, the first time it has displayed its technology outside of a laboratory. It will also be the first time that Samsung has openly shown its technologies to industry figures from overseas. Fourth-generation mobile communication technology refers to the capability of providing data transfer speeds of 100Mbps, or bits per second, while on the move and 1Gbps at a standstill. This technology, whose speed is up to 50 times that of the current high-speed Internet connection, will enable cell phone users to get high-definiton and three-dimensional video clips on their phones. It is expected to be available in 2010. by Yoo Jee-ho
