SKT promotes only Samsung rivals
SK Telecom Co., Korea’s No. 1 mobile network operator, said yesterday it has ordered its service outlets not to promote handsets produced by Samsung Electronics Co. to retaliate for the mobile phone maker’s refusal to share the financial burden of handset subsidies. Samsung rivals LG Electronics Inc. and Pantech Co. accepted SK’s offer. The nation’s three local mobile operators were allowed from Monday to subsidize customers who have used the same service for over 18 months. The regulatory change on subsidies came as good news for many mobile phone users but bad news for operators, who will see costs soar as they financially support customers’ purchases of new handsets.
