Taeyangin men are good for music but not politics
Korean constitutional medicine is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. However, it has been transformed into a new medical system, based on a revolutionary theory generated by Lee Jee-ma (1838-1900), a Korean doctor who struggled for years with a chronic disease that was considered incurable. Dr. Lee discovered that he belonged to a rare constitutional type, which he named taeyangin, and developed a new treatment method for this condition. Years of research culminated in his Four Constitution Theory, which has since revolutionized Korean medicine.
Each constitutional type reflects a characteristic relationship between the major organ systems of the body, which ultimately influences the body’s functioning and appearance, the potential for specific pathologies within the body, and even the character of the individual. According to Korean Medical Theory, there are four constitutional types. Taeyangin and soyangin, which have relatively well-formed upper bodies but weaker lower bodies, tend to be extroverted. On the other hand, taeumin and soumin, which tend to have relatively better-developed lower bodies, tend to be more introverted.
The taeyangin type has broad shoulders and a strong neck, and is generally healthy. They are often charismatic, although at times arrogant. Due to their well-developed lung capacity, many marathon runners and opera singers belong to this category. Taeyangins are easily aroused or angered, especially when they encounter injustices. They prefer fresh, simple meals. Spicy or salty foods often cause digestive problems. Some historical personalities of this type include Hitler, Charlie Chaplin, and Beethoven.
The taeumin type tends to gain weight in the middle or lower abdominal area. This type often appears to be greedy because they like to accumulate money and possessions. They are good eaters and drinkers and generally enjoy their lives. Their consistency enables them to finish projects. Many politicians or businessmen are of this type. They sweat profusely, and feel relieved after visiting a sauna. Due to weak lung function, Taeumins often suffer from skin diseases and colds. Famous taeumins are Winston Churchill, Kim Dae-jung and Ingrid Bergmann.
The soyangin type has a wide chest, but weak lower body. Normally this type has an impatient, strong, extroverted and active character. They are very self-confident and tend to start new projects without hesitation, but become easily bored and lack consistency. They have a lot of yang energy, so they prefer to drink cold water even in winter. Ginseng causes side-effects. Their digestion is excellent but they often suffer from kidney function deficiency, causing lower back pain or excretion problems. Jogging or cycling will improve the lower body portions. Typical soyangins are Bill Clinton and Marilyn Monroe.
The soumin type is endowed with strong kidney function, and therefore a well-developed lower body. In Korea this type is considered favorable for women, because childbirth is easier for soumins. However, their digestive systems tend to be weak, and so ginseng, honey and warm foods are advised. Consumption of cold foods often results in diarrhea. Yin energy is responsible for the cold hands and feet and introverted nature of this type.
Often absorbed in thought, they make decisions only after long consideration. Many pedagogues and philosophers belong to this type. Famous soumins are Abraham Lincoln and Prince Charles.
This summary of the Four Constitutions is naturally very simplified, and limited to the basic theory of the founder. In recent years, however, more innovations have been incorporated into this new and promising field of traditional Oriental medicine.
These include improvements of the original herbal medicine-based treatment methods, as well as new forms of constitutional acupuncture ― another essential treatment component of the holistic traditional Oriental medical system.
