Lefties, once kings of the field, fight to stay on top

The top left-handed pitchers in the KBL are continuing to struggle for their first win.

The SK Wyverns’ Kim Kwang-hyun, last season’s leader in wins with 17, was expected to pitch his first win against the Nexen Heroes last Saturday, but he gave up three runs in the first 4 and 2/3 innings and finished the game with a loss.

He’s not the only one with this fate.

The Hanhwa Eagles’ Ryu Hyun-jin, last season’s leader in strikeouts (184) and ERA (1.82), surrendered four runs in six innings against the Wyverns last Thursday, earning him his third loss in three starts.

And Tuesday, the Kia Tigers’ Yang Hyun-jong, last season’s runner-up in wins, allowed five runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. His ERA has jumped to 11.57 and his two starts have yet to produce wins.

Lefty pitchers have thrown better than their right-handed counterparts since the 2008 season. The lefties collected more wins and had lower ERAs. But they are now falling behind. Right-handed pitchers are averaging a 3.81 ERA compared to the lefties’ 4.41 ERA.

Experts say that foreign right-handed pitchers like Dustin Nippert and Aquilino Lopez are leading this trend, but some say there are other reasons.

Yoo Nam-ho, a member of the KBO’s game management committee and a former Kia Tigers manager, said that lefties don’t always dominate the league, but that strong batters have forced lefty pitchers to adjust their style.

“When the pitcher is strong, the batters always have to prepare [to hit better],” Yoo said to Ilgan Sports. “That’s how baseball goes. It’s always been that way.” The opposite is true when the batter is the strong one.

Yoo’s opinion is backed up by the numbers. Doosan Bears left fielder Kim Hyun-soo only hit a .217 against left-handed pitchers last season, but this season he is hitting .333.

Players like Kim are becoming more common. And some teams have already reaped the benefits. The Samsung Lions, whose batters have had trouble against lefties, have a team batting average of .300 against left-handed pitchers.

When asked how Lions players were able to improve against left-handed pitchers, Lions batting coach Kim Sung-rae said that he is just using more players who know how to hit against lefties.

“We didn’t actually analyze lefty pitchers as a team,” Kim said. “But our manager Ryu Joong-il loves to use players who are strong against lefties.”

MBC commentator Huh Ku-yeon recently gave an interesting opinion on why lefties are being thrashed by batters this season. He said that seven teams in the KBO had worked hard to overcome the lefty pitchers of the Wyverns, the defending champion and current leader.

“Every team is looking to beat the Wyverns, who have the best lefty pitchers in the league,” Huh said. “I believe every team has worked to overcome the lefties during their spring training.”

한국 야구 ‘좌완 천하’, 3년으로 끝?

왼손 천하, 3년으로 끝나나.

지난해 16승 왼손 투수 KIA 양현종은 19일 대구 삼성전에서 1⅓이닝 동안 4피안타·볼넷 세 개로 5실점했다. 시즌 평균자책점은 두자릿수(11.57)로 뛰어올랐다. 양상문 전 롯데 코치는 "양현종은 우타자 몸쪽으로 붙이는 직구가 일품인 투수였다. 지금은 변화구에 지나치게 의존하고 있다"며 우려를 나타냈다. 한화 류현진과 SK 김광현은 지난해 양현종과 함께 다승 부문 세 손가락 안에 들었다. 한국 야구를 대표하는 두 왼손 에이스의 평균자책점은 각각 8.27과 5.65다. 그리고 이들 뿐만이 아니다.

▶왼손 투수 우세 끝?

2008년 이후 세 시즌은 왼손 투수의 시즌이었다. 2007년 다승 10걸 안에 포함된 투수는 류현진 한 명 뿐이었다. 그러나 2008년엔 11명 가운데 6명, 2009년 11명 가운데 5명, 지난해 13명 가운데 7명이었다. 이 세 시즌 동안 왼손 투수들의 평균 자책점은 언제나 우투수보다 낮았다. <표 참조> 그러나 올해는 좌투수 4.41, 우투수 3.81로 역전이다. 거꾸로 2005~2007년엔 모두 우투수가 좌투수보다 평균자책점이 더 좋았다. 3년 주기로 우투수와 좌투수의 성적은 갈리는 것일까.

▶왜?

유남호 한국야구위원회(KBO) 경기운영위원은 19일 잠실구장 1층에서 두산-넥센전을 지켜봤다. 홈플레이트와 가까운 위치다. 그는 "TV 중계에선 '공이 몰려 안타'라고 하지만 (여기에서는) 꽉 찬 공에 안타를 치는 타자가 보인다"며 "투수가 강하면 타자가 연구하고 준비한다. 그래서 야구는 돌고 돈다"고 말했다. 왼손 투수가 영원히 강할 수는 없다는 뜻이다.

두산 김현수는 지난해 좌투수 상대 타율이 2할1푼7리로 떨어지며 고전했다. 올 시즌을 앞두고는 왼손 투수의 공을 더 오래 보고 치는 쪽으로 타격을 수정했다. 올해 김현수는 왼손 투수에게 타율 3할3푼3리(15타수 5안타)를 기록 중이다. 삼성은 올해 좌투 상대 타율이 3할대다. 김성래 삼성 타격 코치는 "왼손 투수 공략을 특별히 연구하진 않았다. 대신 류중일 감독이 좌투에 강한 타자를 중용하고 있다"고 성공 이유를 설명했다. 대표적인 선수가 우타 외야수 배영섭. 배영섭의 좌투수 상대 성적은 14타수 7안타다.

허구연 MBC 해설위원은 흥미로운 견해를 내놨다. "모든 구단의 목표는 '타도 SK'다. 이를 위해선 SK의 막강한 왼손 투수를 넘어야 한다. 스프링캠프 때부터 각 팀들이 왼손 투수 공략에 신경을 썼다."

▶좌투수의 반격?

상대적으로 오른손 투수의 약진은 두드러진다. '우향우'를 주도하는 이들은 외국인 투수. KIA 로페즈와 두산 니퍼트, 롯데 코리, 넥센 나이트는 팀 내에서 에이스 역할을 맡고 있다. 양상문 전 코치는 "국내파 중에선 SK 송은범과 롯데 송승준이 올해 두각을 나타낼 것이다. 삼성 안지만도 가능성이 보인다"고 말했다. 오른손 투수들이 천적인 왼손 타자를 잡을 수 있는 서클체인지업 구사가 늘어났다는 게 올해 경향이기도 하다.

하지만 좌투수의 몰락을 예단하는 건 이르다. 류현진과 김광현은 빼어난 능력에 에이스 경험까지 갖췄다. 초반 부진에 쉽게 무너지진 않는다. 여기에 삼성 장원삼과 LG 봉중근 등 늦은 시즌 데뷔를 준비하는 투수도 있다.
