“Bag Begins,” the eighth and final exhibition in a series before the launch of the handbag brand 0914, will be held through Aug. 31 at the company’s art gallery in Garosu-gil, southern Seoul. Provided by the company

For the past two years, handbag design and manufacturing company Simone has been holding a series of art exhibitions at its art gallery in the basement of the Simone Handbag Museum in Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong, southern Seoul.

This art project was organized to shed new light on handbags as art and look into the artistic significance of handbags, according to Simone, prior to the launch of its own handbag brand 0914, which is set to launch on Sept. 14.

For its final exhibition in the series, titled “Bag Begins,” the company says it decided to communicate the identity of its new brand, “which lies in the sincerity of masterful craftsmanship and creativity expressed through pure materials,” through artwork that shares the same value.

Artists Hong Kyoung-tack, Jung Soon-gu, Jeon Mi-rai, Lee Jin-yong and Mari Kim have been selected to express the artistic value and the identity of 0914 through their works.

Artist Hong Kyoung-tack’s “This is not a bag” painting.

Taking inspiration from Rene Magritte’s painting “Ceci n’est pas une pipe,” Hong came up with the theme “This is not a bag” and created his own meaning for the bag.

“It might sound odd to draw a bag and say that it’s not a bag, but I’d like people to understand the irony in it,” Hong said in a press statement.

“While Magritte’s piece plays with the referentiality of language, I have tried to emphasize the bag and express the bag and other items’ formal similarity in a fun way,” he said. “Also, I have a dachshund at home, and it recently started looking like a bag to me.”

Therefore, Hong decided to do a painting of his dog, adding handles on its back.

“Bag Begins” will run until Aug. 31.

The museum opens at 11 a.m. every day except Mondays and closes at 9 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays and at 7 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.
