iPhone users changing local mobile paradigm

One hundred days have passed since the iPhone landed in Korea, changing the landscape of the country’s mobile phone industry for good.

Last Friday, Pyo Hyun-myung, the president of the mobile business division at KT, the carrier that provides iPhone service in Korea, announced through Twitter that the country now has over 400,000 iPhone users.

Who are these people?

According to a demographics survey conducted by KT, on average about 4,000 people have bought the iPhone each day since it was introduced here on Nov. 28. About 70 percent were men. Half were in their 20s. And 30 percent of the users lived in wealthy southern Seoul areas like Gangnam, Seocho and Songpa districts.

Industry sources say it’s important to keep an eye on these iPhone demographics as they are a key to surviving in smartphone competition. Changes they already brought to the industry are numerous.

KT has reported a significant rise in downloads of mobile applications. According to the company, downloads of mobile data surged a whopping 122 times in December and January compared to January through November of last year before the iPhone arrived.

KT says smartphones will lead to an unprecedented boom in businesses related to mobile data and accessories, expected to be worth some 2.5 trillion won ($2.2 billion) by 2012 and create 4,900 jobs. Also, while previous mobile related business have largely been limited to downloads of apps and music, the industry will expand to encompass mobile banking and advertising.

There were 1.9 million mobile banking activities last year, but industry sources anticipate that number to soar by more than six times by 2012.

KT가 아이폰 출시 100일을 앞두고 조사한 바에 따르면 국내에 보급된 아이폰은 40만 대로, 하루 4000대꼴로 개통됐다. 아이폰 출시 두 달 간의 월 평균 무선데이터 사용량은 5083만6844메가바이트(MB)로 이전 11개월간의 월 평균(41만5314MB)의 122.4배에 달했다. 가입자 개인별로 따져본 무선데이터 사용량도 10배 넘게 급증했다. 아이폰을 독점 공급하는 KT의 지난해 4분기 무선데이터 매출은 전년 동기 대비 18% 늘었다. KT경제경영연구소의 고윤전 박사는 “설문조사 결과 아이폰 구입 후 집에서 PC 사용 시간이 줄었다는 경우가 59%에 달했다”고 전했다. 응답자의 97%는 유선인터넷이 깔린 집에서도 무료로 인터넷에 접속하는 와이파이(WiFi·근거리 무선)가 필요하다고 했다.
