North Korea develops nuclear fusion technology: state media
North Korea announced today it has succeeded in developing a nuclear fusion reaction. It represents “a breakthrough” in its development of nuclear technology, according to the North’s state media.
"Nuclear fusion is a breakthrough event that shows North Korea's cutting-edge technology that is leaping forward," said the Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the ruling Workers’ Party.
It added that the North "made a definite breakthrough toward the development of new energy and opened up a new phase in the nation's development of the latest science and technology."
Fusion reactions are a cleaner alternative to the fission reactions that power conventional nuclear reactors. But fusion reactions for the purposes of energy generation have not yet left the realm of experimentation.
The paper didn’t say whether the technology would be used to develop atomic weapons. Fusion reactions result in a thermonuclear explosion, such as one generated by a hydrogen bomb.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has recently reaffirmed his commitment to denuclearization. But the country remains a suspect in the sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan and South Korea and the United States have said there would be no six-party nuclear talks before the completion of the probe into the sinking.

북한 과학자들이 핵융합 기술을 자체 개발했다고 북한 노동당 기관지 노동신문이 12일 주장했다.
조선중앙통신에 따르면 노동신문은 이날 1면 기사에서 "조선의 과학자들이 핵융합 반응을 성공시키는 자랑찬 성과를 이룩했다"며 "핵융합 성공은 발전하는 조선(북한)의 첨단과학 기술 면모를 과시한 일대 사변"이라고 보도했다.
신문은 이어 "우리 과학자들은 수많은 과학기술적 문제들을 100％ 자체 힘으로 해결함으로써 마침내 핵융합 반응에 성공했다"면서 "이 과정에 우리 식의 독특한 열핵 반응장치가 설계 제작되고 핵융합 반응과 관련한 기초 연구가 끝났다"고 덧붙였다.
신문은 또 "원천이 무진장하고 환경 피해가 거의 없는 안전한 새 에네르기(에너지)를 얻기 위한 핵융합 기술은 오늘 세계 과학계의 커다란 관심을 모으고 있다"며 "핵융합에 성공함으로써 새 에네르기 개발을 위한 돌파구가 확고하게 열렸다"고 자평했다. (연합뉴스)
