A star-crossed couple divided by war

The tragedy of the Korean Peninsula has always been a tempting topic for cineasts. Looking at the list of the top 10 highest-grossing Korean films, two of them, “Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War” (2004) and “Welcome to Dongmakgol” (2005), are based on the Korean War (1950-1953). Three other films, “Silmido” (2003), “Joint Security Area” (2000) and “Shiri” (1998), all have stories of modern Korea that deal with the legacy of the war.

The topic doesn’t always entice audiences, though.

Recent films based on the war have had poor showings at the box office. The blockbuster “71: Into the Fire” (2010), featuring pan-Asian stars including Kwon Sang-woo and Song Seung-hun, barely reached the break-even point. Other drama series based on the war such as “Road Number One” and “Jeonwoo” were panned by viewers for their lack of historic research.

Marking the 61st anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, however, another Korean film “In Love and the War” is hoping to build on the success of recent Korean War films.

The film is a story about townspeople living in a far corner of Korea who are visited by a group of North Korean soldiers and eventually side with the soldiers in order to survive.

The film’s leading actors and director Park Kun-yong appeared at a film screening for the press on April 12 in central Seoul.

To save their lives, the people of Seokjeong pretend to give a group of North Korean soldiers a warm welcome to their village in the film “In Love and War.”

When asked to describe “In Love and War,” Park said that its “main purpose is to highlight the plight of the most vulnerable people in the Korean War - innocent civilians.”

This is Park’s second film after his impressive debut “Lifting King Kong” (2009), which was based on the true story of female high school outsiders who join a weight lifting club to escape poverty and fill their stomachs with the snacks given by the club.

“In Love and the War” is also based on a true story.

“The screenplay was written by Bae Sae-young [who wrote the screenplay for ‘Lifting King Kong’] and is based on the life of her grandmother, who used to live in Pyeongtaek.”

Park said that a group of soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army stayed for a couple of days at the grandmother’s home (because the grandmother’s father was the village leader), and one young soldier, touched by the villagers’ hospitality, said that he wanted to stay.

The movie follows this story line and adds another story about a star-crossed couple.

“This film is not 100 percent true, but it all began with this real episode and I wanted to use it to inspire viewers to think about what the war left behind,” he said. “I also tried to give the tragic story a light-hearted touch.”

In order to make the story more appealing, Park enlisted a diverse group of actors, including veteran Byun Hee-bong (“The Host” 2006), who plays the village leader, Yu Hae-jin (“Moss” 2010), and supporting actors Kim Sang-ho (“The Moss” 2010) and Shin Jung-keun (“Pyongyang Castle” 2011).

In addition to this experienced group, Kim Joo-hyuk and Jeong Ryeo-won, who are often praised for their acting abilities, play the leading roles.

Kim is an officer of the North Korean People’s Army who visits a small town, where he meets Jeong, a smart young woman who is loved and trusted by the townspeople. The couple strives to stay together, despite being on different sides of the war.

Jeong broke into the entertainment scene as a member of the now-defunct girl group Chakra back in 2000 but later pursued a career in acting. She is one of a few successful singer-turned-actresses in the country, but said she struggled with this role.

“Most of my previous films and dramas were focused on two leads, me and my co-star, but this film was a particular challenge for me in the sense that it covers the experiences of many different characters in one story,” Jeong said.

Meanwhile, Kim confessed to having had a difficult time learning the Pyongan Province dialect.

“At the beginning, I had a North Korean tutor, but I lost my tutor and had to learn it by myself,” he said.

“In Love and the War” is slated to open on April 28 at theaters nationwide. Its original Korean title is “Sleeping with the Enemy.”

‘적과의 동침’, ‘동막골’과 비슷하다고? 실화라 더 깊은 감동

영화 ‘적과의 동침’에서 가장 주목해야 할 것은 ‘실화’를 바탕으로 한 작품이라는 점이다. 한국전쟁 시 북한 인민군이 순박한 시골마을 사람들에게 감화된다는 이야기는 얼핏 보면 영화 ‘웰컴 투 동막골’(2005) 내용과 비슷할 것 같지만 전혀 다르다. ‘적과의 동침’은 실화여서 더욱 감동의 울림이 크다.

12일 언론시사회를 통해 공개된 ‘적과의 동침’은 1950년 평화로운 경기도 평택의 시골마을 석정리를 배경으로 한 영화로, 마을에 들이닥친 인민군과 이들에게 로비작전을 펼쳐 그들을 무장해제시키는 순박한 마을사람들의 이야기다. 허구 같은 이 이야기는 한국전쟁 당시 한 마을의 실화를 바탕으로 했다. 당시 생존한 마을주민에 의해 전해진 이야기를 작가가 시나리오로 써 영화화됐다.

배세영 작가(킹콩을 들다 각본)는 실제 할머니로부터 한국전쟁 시 자신이 살고 있던 마을을 점령한 인민군을 마을사람들이 따뜻하게 맞아줬으며 인민군들 역시 마을사람들을 가족처럼 따르며 정을 쌓았다는 이야기를 듣고 시나리오로 옮겼다. 영화 속 연합군의 개입으로 후퇴하게 된 어린 학생 인민군이 “마을에서 계속 살고 싶다”는 말을 남겨 주민의 마음을 아프게 하는 상황도 모두 실화다.

허구가 아닌 실화이기에 ‘무공해 휴머니즘’을 이끌어냈다. 무공해 휴머니즘이기 때문에 그것에서 오는 감동과 웃음에는 진정성이 담겨있다. 허구에서는 느낄 수 없는 ‘무공해 웃음과 감동’이다. 탄탄한 실화이기에 자연스럽게 이끌어낼 수 있었던 휴머니즘. ‘적과의 동침’은 ‘실화의 힘’을 보여주는 작품이다.

영화는 초중반 인민군과 마을사람들의 동화 과정을 그리며 코미디와 드라마에 집중하다 후반에 한국 사람이라면 누구나 가슴 한 켠에 묻어 뒀을 ‘분단의 비극’을 건드려 심장에서 무언가를 끓어오르게 한다.

‘킹콩을 들다’ 박건용 감독이 연출한 또 하나의 웰메이드 휴먼드라마다. 특유의 섬세한 휴머니즘으로 관객의 가슴을 울리는 박건용 감독은 자신의 장기를 이용해 이번에도 눈물샘을 자극한다.

김주혁과 정려원의 연기는 물 만난 물고기처럼 물이 올랐다. 첫사랑을 찾아 남한에 내려온 엘리트 인민군 장교(정웅) 역의 김주혁은 카리스마 있는 리더의 모습과 첫사랑(정려원)에 대한 순애보적인 모습, 두 면모를 오가며 열연했다. 마음을 건드리는 김주혁의 연기력은 관객을 무장해제시키고 손수건을 적시게 하기 충분하다.

정려원은 영화 ‘김씨 표류기’(2009)에 이어 이번 작품에서도 예뻐 보이는 것과는 거리 있는 시골 여성을 맡았다. 석정리 신여성 설희로 분해 시골 처녀의 순박함과 함께 인민군에게도 할 말 다 하는 똑 부러지는 마을 선생의 당찬 모습을 선보인다. 인민군 정웅과 마을 처녀 설희의 이뤄지기 힘든 로맨스도 볼거리. 아름답고 감성적으로 풀어냈다.

또 명품 조연진이 총 출연해 웃음을 책임졌다. 코믹트리오 유해진, 김상호, 신정근과 변희봉, 양정아 등 연기파 배우들이 작품성을 높였다.

순박한 웃음과 감동적인 휴머니즘으로 웃겼다가 울게 하는 실화 영화 ‘적과의 동침’. 실화 영화이기에 전해지는 진한 감동은 허구 영화에서는 흉내 낼 수 없는 것이다.

러닝타임 135분. 12세 관람가. 28일 개봉.

# 시놉시스
1950년 한국전쟁 시 평화롭기만 하던 경기도 평택의 석정리에 갑자기 찾아 온 절체절명의 위기. 전쟁도 소문으로만 듣는 시골마을 석정리에 불청객이 찾아온다. 한국전쟁으로 온 나라가 난리통이지만 라디오도 잘 나오지 않는 석정리는 평화롭기만 하다. 구장(변희봉)댁의 당찬 손녀딸 설희(정려원)의 혼사 준비로 분주한 동네 사람들 앞에 유학파 엘리트 장교 정웅(김주혁)이 이끄는 인민군 부대가 나타난다.

그러나 총 들고 쳐들어온 적도 밭 갈며 눌러 앉게 만드는 순박하고 유쾌한 로비작전이 펼쳐진다. 초반 인민군의 마을 접수는 순조로워 보인다. 인민군은 그들을 열렬히 환영하는 재춘(유해진)과 두 팔 걷어붙이고 그들을 도와주는 백씨(김상호), 조용하고 인자한 성품의 구장(변희봉) 등 정 많은 마을사람들 덕분에 점점 무장해제된다. 하지만 이는 모두 마을의 안전을 위한 주민들의 로비작전. 석정리에는 어느 새 적과 동지의 구분이 없어지기 시작한다. 전세가 불리해지자 인민군 상부에서는 마을사람들을 사살하라는 비밀작전을 명령한다.
