Prostitutes, malls have tough time coexisting

Red light districts and shopping malls, it turns out, don’t make suitable neighbors. As large shopping malls sprout up all over the country, the long-established red light districts that remain in their shadows are crying foul over interruptions to their services.

For the malls, it’s simply an uncomfortable relationship of proximity, but for the prostitutes and their pimps, it’s a threat to their livelihoods.

The Times Square shopping mall next to Yeongdeungpo Station, western Seoul, finds itself in a pickle as their customers complain and nearby brothel owners maintain their right to earn a living.

After police decided that the red light district be wiped out, prostitutes threatened to self-immolate and run into Times Square and Shinsegae Department Store in protest.

Sex workers say they won’t surrender their right to earn a living. Prostitutes on Sunday visited luxury brand outlets, including Louis Vuitton and Gucci, in Shinsegae Department store and offered to pay for items with million-won bags of coins. They were soon escorted out by the police for creating a public disturbance.

“We are being blamed for something that is not related to us, and it has created a great disturbance to our customers who visited on the weekend,” said a Times Square official. “However, we cannot actively respond to [the women] because we could create a misunderstanding, so we are in a very tough situation.”

A Shinsegae Department Store official said brothel owners and employees are unfairly targeting them.

“I think they are misinterpreting the situation into thinking we are asking the police to wipe the red-light districts off the map to develop the area,” said a Shinsegae Department Store official. “Redevelopment doesn’t guarantee profit and the land is divided into very complicated portions.”

Yeongdeungpo is not the only area in Seoul with the problem. Lotte Department Store’s Cheongnyangni branch and I’Park Mall in Yongsan are all located a stone’s throw away from red light districts. While Times Square has blocked the view of the neighboring brothels from its building, Lotte Department Store did quite the opposite: complaints have flooded in from customers since the mall directs exiting customers through a red light district when they exit the parking lot.

쇼핑몰 옆 집창촌 ‘불편한 동거’

생존권 보장 요구하며 매장 난입도

역사 주변에 들어선 대형 쇼핑몰이 집창촌 업주, 성매매 여성과의 물리적 마찰로 해당 유통업체가 곤혹스러운 처지다.

집창촌은 주로 유동인구가 많은 역 주변에 수십년간 자생해 왔는데 최근 서울 시내 주요 역과 그 주변이 쇼핑몰이나 백화점으로 속속 개발되면서 `불편한 동거`를 하면서 벌어지는 일이다.

16일 업계에 따르면 영등포역 옆의 국내 최대 복합쇼핑몰인 타임스퀘어는 지난달부터 인접한 집창촌 업주와 종사자들의 집회에 난처한 상황이다.

이들은 지난달 영등포경찰서가 영등포역 주변의 집창촌에 대한 `고사작전`을 벌이면서부터 본격적으로 반발했다. 생존권을 보장하라는 것이다.

지난달 중순 이곳의 성매매 여성 일부가 몸에 까나리액젓과 시너를 뿌린 채 속옷 차림으로 타임스퀘어의 신세계백화점에 난입했다.

이어 이달 15일에도 신세계백화점 명품관의 루이뷔통, 구찌 매장에 들어와 100만원이 넘는 가방을 사고서 이를 동전으로 계산하겠다며 `준법 시위`를 했다. 16일에도 타임스퀘어 앞 광장에서 집회를 벌일 예정이다.

타임스퀘어 관계자는 이날 "우리와 전혀 관계없는데 결과적으로 주말에 온 손님에게 불편을 끼쳐 영업에 손해를 입었다"며 "그러나 너무 적극적으로 대응하는 것도 오해를 살 수 있어 난처한 입장이다"라고 전했다.

신세계백화점 관계자는 "쇼핑몰이 집창촌을 개발하기 위해 경찰의 단속을 부추겼다고 생각하는 것 같다"며 "해당 지역은 개발해도 별다른 이익이 없는데다 지분관계가 복잡해 전혀 개발 계획이 없는 것으로 안다"고 말했다.

역사 주변의 쇼핑몰과 집창촌이 인접한 곳은 이곳뿐만 아니다.

롯데백화점 청량리역점은 이른바 `588 집창촌`과 맞닿았고 용산역 아이파크몰도 바로 앞에 작은 규모의 집창촌이 있다.

집창촌이 쇠락의 길로 접어드는 추세지만 유통업체로선 이들의 존재 자체가 여간 불편한 게 아니다.

타임스퀘어는 집창촌이 보이는 방향엔 기계실과 같은 손님이 접근하지 못하는 시설을 배치하는 설계를 했고 이곳으로 통하는 길에 안내요원을 세워둬 `민망한` 장면이 연출되지 못하도록 애쓰고 있다.

롯데백화점도 10여년 전만 해도 길이 복잡해 주차장 출구를 나서면 집창촌을 가로지르는 길로 이어져 특히 자녀를 동반한 가족단위 손님들의 거센 항의를 받곤 했다.

업계 관계자는 "쇼핑몰에 사람이 많다 보니 집창촌 종사자들이 자신의 뜻을 알리려고 집회 장소로 택하는 경우가 있다"며 "강력하게 대응하면 더 일이 커질 수 있어 역 주변 집창촌이 완전히 사라지기 전엔 감수할 수밖에 없을 것"이라고 말했다.
