Jeju offers hands-on haenyeo experience: Live performances, a museum and guided swims are available

With the aim of adding haenyeo to Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, Jeju is doing its best to promote these female divers. A few of these promotions include the creation of a cute haenyeo character and a haenyeo exhibition.
This reporter followed the trace of the island’s female divers to fully experience their lives.

“We don’t usually catch abalone and conch at this time of the year, since it is their breeding season,” said a haenyeo. “But we will make an exception this time, so catch whatever you want if you have the abilities.”
The haenyeo’s words inspired the four students and this reporter. We excitedly put on our wet suits, fins and goggles.
“Breathe only through your mouth,” said a 67-year-old female diver while cleaning her goggles with green seaweed. “If you breathe through your nose, water will fill up your swim goggles.”
Then we all jumped into the water, clutching the digging tools we’d been given to help us pry loose abalone.
In August, the waters around Jeju are very warm and the undulating tentacles of seaweed are rife with brilliantly colored tropical fish. And the female divers that crept along so slowly on land seemed to move like marlins in the sea. With their nimble help, we were even able to catch some sea urchins and even one or two conch shells.

Meeting Haenyeo
An exclusive haenyeo museum lies in Hado-ri, Gujwa County, in Jeju.
The haenyeo museum may seem ordinary, since there are all sorts of unique museums located on the island, but visitors to the museum can browse the various types of clothing that these divers wore while working in the sea.
When the reporter saw the garments that haenyeo wore while fishing, he felt overwhelmed, since the items all seemed too thin to protect against the icy waters of the sea during colder months. From the observatory located on the third floor, real female divers swimming in the Sehwa Sea were spotted.
At around 3 p.m. on the same day, a singing performance by the female divers at an ocean near Seongsan Ilchulbong [the island’s so-called Sunrise Peak] was put on to entertain tourists.
As soon as they finished singing, the haenyeo jumped into the sea to demonstrate some of their skills. Although it looked simple, it was definitely arduous work. And all the while, their songs, which have been repeated generation after generation for decades, echoed along the windy shore.
A demonstration by haenyeo is also available at Hanwha Aqua Planet Jeju located at the entrance of Seopjikoji Beach, Seoguipo.
Under the giant water tank there, haenyeo and aquarists, or aquatic animal caretakers, pair up to show their audience what they’re capable of underwater, such as digging up abalone.
Through such performance, audience members can come to appreciate the difficulty of their work while enjoying the balletic elegance of their movements.
Cute Haenyeo Characters
In an effort to promote Jeju’s haenyeo, in addition to performances at the Haenyeo museum and an aquarium at Hanwha Aqua Planet Jeju, which annually attract around 200,000 tourists, another example is the animated character “Mongni,” which was inspired by haenyeo.
Another animated feature, “Mongni & the Eco-guardians,” has also recently been released. This show, which came out in May under the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Creative Content Agency, revolves around a group of female divers.
The ongoing animation, which is aired through SBS, is about haenyeo protecting Jeju Island from environmental pollution. The characters featured on “Mongni” have become Jeju mascots and are sold around the island in all different forms, including clocks, small dolls, on pencils and on clothes. Two of the most popular items are a portable fan, which costs 6,000 won ($5), and a moneybox, which costs 8,000 won.
Mongni is displayed at a character museum called Charac World located in Jocheon County, where it is joined by numerous worldwide characters such as the Transformers and Iron Man.
Mongni is also displayed at the mural village situated in Sinchon-ri, where over 100 walls are painted with different drawings.
According to a source from Jeju TechnoPark, which supports the production of Mongni character, “We are currently developing a mobile game featuring Mongni.”
The source added, “And we are planning to introduce bread and hotel rooms decorated with Mongni.”

There is a Hado Sea Experience Village, which is about an hour and 15 minutes from Jeju International Airport.
The daily haenyeo experience is available there, which costs 20,000 won for five people. Also, the experience of fishing with bamboo sticks instead of the usual rod can be had for 10,000 won. There’s also snorkeling, which also costs 10,000 won.

At Hanwha Aqua Planet Jeju, haenyeo performances are put on four times a day.
The aquarium runs throughout the year. The entrance fee is 39,500 won for adults and 35,900 won for children.

[여행은 콘텐트다] 해녀따라 바다에 풍덩…날아다니는 할망 뒤에서 엉금엉금
해녀는 제주도를 대표하는 문화 콘텐트다. 억척스러운 그녀들의 삶이 제주도를 지키고 먹여 살렸다는 점에서 해녀는 제주의 문화이자 역사다. 지금 제주도에선 해녀를 적극 활용한 문화 콘텐트 발굴 노력이 활발하다. 제주 해녀를 유네스코 인류무형문화유산으로 등재하기 위해서다. 물질 체험은 물론이고 해녀를 테마로 삼은 전시와 체험 행사가 곳곳에서 진행되고 있다. 최근에는 앙증맞은 꼬마 해녀 캐릭터도 나왔다. 해녀의 자취를 좇아 제주도를 돌아다녔다. 해녀만 가지고도 그럴듯한 여행 코스가 만들어졌다.
일일 해녀에 도전하다
해녀를 이해하는 가장 적극적인 방식은 함께 물에 들어가 보는 일일 터다. 제주시 구좌읍 하도 어촌체험마을을 찾았다. 마침 물질 체험에 나선 대학생 무리에 합류했다. 모두 남자였다. 일일 해녀, 아니 ‘해남(海男)’ 체험인 셈이었다.
“전복·소라 같은 놈은 지금 산란기라 잡으면 안 되는데, 눈감아 줄 테니 실력이 있거든 캐봐 어디.”
마을 어르신이 승부욕을 자극했다. 잠수복 차림에 오리발과 물안경을 착용하고, 테왁(부력을 이용한 물질 도구)과 빗창(전복을 딸 때 사용하는 도구)을 들었다. 처음 입어보는 해녀 복장이 우스꽝스러워 서로 바라보며 한참을 웃었다. 한편으론 걱정도 앞섰다. 해남 네 명 모두 물질은 처음이었다. 40년 경력의 현순심(67) 해녀가 파래로 물안경을 닦으며 말했다.
“숨은 입으로만! 코로 쉬면 물안경에 공이가 차서 물이 새어 들어와. 힘들면 테왁 위로 올라와서 잠시 쉬웠다가 물속으로 들어가고.”
숨을 크게 들이마시고 물속으로 뛰어들었다. 8월의 제주 바다는 따뜻했다. 이름을 알 수 없는 열대어가 미역과 산호 사이를 헤집고 다녔다. 뭍에서는 걸음이 느렸던 해녀 할망이 물속에선 날아다녔다. 바다에 들어갔다 나올 때마다 망사리(해물을 담는 그물)에 성게·소라 따위가 채워졌다. 해녀의 도움을 받아 초보 해남도 바위틈에서 성게를 땄다.
해남 체험 1시간은 금세 끝났다. 첫 도전의 결과물은 초라했다. 커다란 망사리가 민망하게 느껴질 정도로 채취한 양이 적었다. 그래도 성게와 소라를 소쿠리에 모아 놓고 보니 뿌듯했다. 제주도 출신 체험자 홍승완(25)씨가 머쓱한 표정으로 말했다.
“제 할머니께서도 해녀이신데 오늘에서야 알았네요. 이토록 힘들게 아버지와 저를 키우셨네요.”
해녀를 만나다
하도리에는 국내 유일의 해녀박물관도 있다. 별별 박물관이 다 있는 제주도에서 해녀박물관은 어쩌면 가장 심심한 박물관일 수 있다. 오로지 해녀 하나만 파고 있으니 말이다. 그러나 해녀박물관은 생각보다 유익했고 흥미로웠다.
2층 전시실에서 옛날에 해녀가 입었다는 물소중이(하의)와 물적삼(상의)을 봤다. 그저 속옷, 하얀 천 조각에 불과해 보였다. 저 얇은 홑옷으로 어찌 차가운 바다를 버텼을까. 가슴이 먹먹했다. 3층 전망대에 올라서니 세화 앞바다에서 물질하는 해녀 할망의 모습이 내다보였다. 휘이휘이 해녀의 숨비소리가 들리는 듯했다.
오후 3시쯤 성산일출봉 아래 해변에 들었다. 마침 성산어촌계에서 하루 두 차례 진행하는 해녀 물질 공연이 열리고 있었다. ‘이어도 사나~ 어이 허이~’ 노래가 끝나자 해녀들은 가까운 바다로 들어가 물질 시범을 보였다. 단순하고도 수고스러운 공연이었다. 수십 년을 불렀을 그 소리가 노래 이상의 울림으로 다가왔다.
섭지코지 어귀 한화 아쿠아플라넷 제주에서도 해녀의 물질 공연이 열렸다. 수심 10m 대형 수조 안에서 현직 해녀와 아쿠아리스트가 짝을 이뤄 물질 모습을 재연했다. 해녀와 아쿠라이스트의 잠수 대결, 전복 따기 시연 등이 이어졌다. 대형 수조를 통해 보니, 해녀가 얼마나 깊은 물속으로 내려가는지 한눈에 확인할 수 있었다. 어떤 기계 장치도 없이 깊은 물속을 오르내리는 해녀의 몸놀림은 어떤 아쿠아리스트 못지 않게 우아하고 역동적이었다.
캐릭터로 거듭난 해녀
지금 제주도에서는 해녀를 문화 콘텐트로 활용하려는 노력이 활발하다. 연간 20만 명 이상이 다녀가는 해녀박물관, 아쿠아리움의 대표 공연으로 자리 잡은 해녀 물질 공연이 좋은 사례다. 해녀를 모티브로 한 애니메이션 ‘꼬마해녀 몽니’도 있다. 2012년 TV 애니메이션으로 제작해 중국·태국·대만 등 해외 6개 국에서 수출한 스타 캐릭터다.
지난 5월에는 문화체육관광부·한국콘텐츠진흥원의 지원을 받아 제작한 두 번째 애니메이션 ‘꼬마해녀 몽니와 해녀특공대’도 나왔다. 꼬마 해녀가 환경 오염으로부터 제주도를 지켜나간다는 줄거리다. 현재 SBS에서 방영중이다.
꼬마해녀 몽니는 제주도 홍보대사 역할을 톡톡히 하고 있다. 기념품·조형물·벽화 등의 소재로 활용되며 제주도 전역에서 활약하고 있다. 중문 컨벤션 면세점과 제주공항 인근 테마파크 ‘재밋섬’에서 다양한 몽니 캐릭터 상품을 판매한다. 인형·연필·옷 등 종류도 다양하다. 몽니가 그려진 휴대용 선풍기(6000원)와 저금통(8000원)이 인기가 제일 좋단다.
조천읍에 있는 캐릭터 박물관 ‘캐릭월드’에서도 몽니를 만날 수 있다. 아이언맨·트랜스포머 같은 세계적인 인기 캐릭터와 몽니가 어깨를 나란히 하고 있다. 제주올레 3코스(성산읍 온평포구∼표선 해비치 해변)에서도 몽니를 만날 수 있다. 100개가 넘는 벽화로 마을을 꾸민 신천리 벽화마을에 몽니 캐릭터도 그려져 있다.
몽니 캐릭터 제작을 지원한 제주테크노파크 박기석 팀장은 “현재 몽니를 활용한 모바일 게임 앱을 개발하고 있다”며 “올해 안에 몽니로 꾸민 호텔 객실과 캐릭터 빵도 나올 예정”이라고 소개했다.
