Refresh and relax while on the road: As travelers take to the highways to enjoy fall, rest stops with unique features have become attractions

For drivers who need to take a break every hour to stretch their legs and fill up the gas tank, rest stops on highways provide all the essential facilities and services. And nowadays, many rest stops are going above and beyond providing only the basic services.
There are a total of 28 different highways in Korea, and the 182 rest stops are the spots where drivers forget about being behind the wheel for a few minutes, according to the Korea Expressway Corporation. Here, we introduce 10 rest stops worth spending a little more time at than just going in for a bathroom break and refilling the gas tank.

(Jungbu Expressway Tongyeong direction)
Here, visitors can time travel to the 1970s as the rest stop is decorated as a street with buildings from that era. There is an old movie theater, a small supermarket and a used book store. One can take a look at items that used to be sold at such stores back in the day, including a box of crayons made by a company popular among elementary school students in the 1970s and 1980s. Old movie posters and textbooks used in the 1970s are also on display. It’s a nostalgic place for adults and an educational place for youngsters to learn about how much Korea has changed in a short amount of time.
Jukam Rest Stop
(Gyeongbu Expressway Seoul direction)
Since many people are now traveling with their pets, this rest stop created a space where drivers with pets can have a comfortable break. There is an area called Meongmeong Park (named after the sound in Korean that dogs make when they bark). The free facility has about eight workout areas for dogs featuring wooden steps and hurdles. It also sells dog snacks such as a can of lamb or chicken for 2,000 won ($1.82) or chewing sticks for 1,000 won. There is also a walking trail for those looking for a place for themselves after they entertain their dogs.
Tancheon Rest Stop
(Cheonan-Nonsan Expressway Nonsan direction)
This rest stop is located in the area that used to be a part of the Baekje Kingdom. (18 B.C-600 A.D.). Using this to its advantage to bring in people interested in history, it opened a center where one can learn more about the capital city Buyeo of Baekje. After the cities of Gongju and Buyeo in South Chungcheong and Iksan in North Jeolla were designated Unesco cultural heritage sites, more people have been making their way to drop by the rest stop. Models of artifacts are on display with photos and detailed explanations on how things are made and their historical background.
(Honam Expressway Suncheon direction)
Here the most eye-catching facility is the restroom. It took 280 million won to complete the remodeling of the bathroom and it opened to visitors in July.
It garnered attention for its luxurious look more frequently seen at fancy hotels or restaurants. The women’s restroom is inspired by the popular Hollywood film “Roman Holiday,” starring Audrey Hepburn, and photos of famous scenes from the beloved movie decorate the room. The children’s restroom is made as if the entire place is inside a spaceship. Each stall is named after a planet.
Jinan Mount Mai Rest Stop
(Iksan-Pohang Expressway in both direction)
This rest stop was built in a location with an excellent view of Jinan’s famous Mt. Mai.
If visitors want to have a even better look at the mountain, they can climb up to the observatory on top of the hill located next to the rest stop. The trail is paved and features wooden steps to help ease the climb for visitors without hiking shoes.
There are some other interested things to see at the observatory including a so-called Slow Mailbox which delivers your messages in the mail on a desired date, usually a couple of months to a year later.
Pyeongchang Rest Stop
(Yeongdong Expresswa Gangneung direction)
This rest stop recently went through a two-month renovation and re-opened in July. As the town prepares for the upcoming Winter Olympics, many winter sports-related paintings are on display throughout the facility. Anywhere that you might spend time, such as the cash registers at a convenient store, there are brief explanations of the sports that will be played during the Olympic games in 2018. There is a big painting of a ski jump tower in front of the men’s restroom that anyone can pose next to that makes it look like they are about to make a jump just like the pros.
Danyang Rest Stop
(Jungang Expressway Busan direction)
“Who ordered jjajangmyeon?” A delivery man looking for someone who ordered the Korean style Chinese black noodle is a scene that any visitor to this particular rest stop will see often. It may feel weird to get food delivered while most people come to a rest stop to go inside the restaurant and eat, but this particular rest stop encourages food delivery to attract more drivers wanting to take a rest. At the park on the rest stop grounds, you can call and order food from nearby restaurants and you will get your food delivered right to you.
(Dangjin-Yeongdeok Expressway Sangju direction)
This particular rest stop is a hit with the kids, thanks to a character-themed park open to visitors. At the entrance of the park, an impressive Dutch-style windmill stands. After walking through a flower field, one is greeted with a variety of cute animal statues, including a koala bear hanging on a tree and a meercat (pictured left) standing in the middle of the grassy field. Visitors can also relax near the pond featuring a small waterfall and ducks.
Hyeongpung Rest Stop
(Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway Hyeonpung direction)
A 500-year old Zelkova tree, considered to have kept the nearby Seonghali village safe over the years, stands prominently at this rest stop. The park around the tree tells its story. The park also features a small house shaped like a triangle. It is a small library (pictured right) with enough room for up to four people at a time. There is also a walking trail and an observatory where one can see the Nakdong River.
Munsan Rest Stop
(Namhae Expressway Suncheon direction)
The name of the park at this rest stop, which roughly translates to “Wish Light Theme Park” comes from a popular local festival celebrating different lanterns and lighting designs that takes place every fall in Jinju in South Gyeongsang. Many red and blue traditional lanterns bearing wishes are hung around the park. When you want to put your wish on a lantern, you write your wish on a piece of yellow paper found in the restaurant of the rest stop. If you leave your wish, officials there will later create a lantern for it.
별의별 휴게소, 골라가는 재미
-가볼만한 전국 이색 휴게소 10곳
한국도로공사에 따르면 현재 전국의 고속도로는 모두 28개 노선이 있습니다. 고속도로 위에 휴게소는 모두 182곳이 있고요. 그 휴게소가 그 휴게소라고요? 글쎄요. 전국 고속도로 휴게소를 뒤지고 다녔는데, 정말 많이 달라졌던데요? 각양각색의 휴게소가 있더라고요. 알아보니 2∼3년 전부터 고속도로 휴게소가 진화를 거듭하는 중이라고 하네요.
호남고속도로 순천방향의 정읍휴게소(전북 정읍)부터 들러볼까요. 분수·해먹·흔들의자 등이 설치된 솔숲공원이 있어 운전자의 쉼터 같은 역할을 하고 있는 휴게소입니다. 사실 한 달쯤 전부터 정읍휴게소는 화장실 때문에 ‘난리’가 났습니다. SNS에서 ‘휴게소 화장실의 끝판왕’‘이곳은 호텔 화장실이 아닙니다’라는 글이 올라왔거든요.
정읍휴게소는 7월 21일 화장실 리모델링을 마쳤는데, 화장실이 5성급 호텔 못지않습니다. 김영기(47) 소장이 “여성 고객이 영화 ‘로마의 휴일’에 나오는 앤 공주(오드리 햅번)처럼 대우받는 느낌이 들도록 화장실을 만들었다”고 자랑을 하더군요. 한국도로공사에 따르면 올 연말까지 전국 고속도로 휴게소의 화장실이 모두 호텔 수준으로 업그레이드될 것이라고 합니다.
영동고속도로 강릉방면 평창휴게소(강원도 평창)는 7월 말 리모델링을 마쳤습니다. 두 달간의 공사를 끝내고 다시 문을 열었는데 휴게소 전체가 ‘2018 평창 겨울올림픽’ 홍보 부스 같더군요. 편의점·식당은 물론이고 화장실에도 겨울올림픽 종목의 피규어와 스키나 스노보드를 이용한 트릭아트 작품을 설치해 놓았습니다. 컬링 경기의 스톤도 전시해 놓았더군요. 사진 찍고 놀다 보면 30분은 훌쩍 지날 것 같았습니다.
찾아보니 별의별 휴게소가 다 있었습니다. 경부고속도로 서울방향 김천휴게소와 남해고속도로 부산방향 섬진강휴게소(전남 광양)에서는 손님이 김치찌개를 끓이고 있더군요. 이들 휴게소는 2년 전 전기레인지를 설치해 손님이 직접 음식을 끓여먹을 수 있도록 했습니다. 경부고속도로 서울방향 입장휴게소(충남 천안)는 지난달 바(Bar) 형태의 식탁을 갖다놨더군요. 이른바 ‘혼밥족’을 위한 식탁이랍니다. 빵이나 치즈를 만들어 먹을 수 있는 휴게소도 있고요, 휴게소 마당의 정자(亭子)에서 짜장면을 시켜 먹을 수 있는 휴게소도 있답니다.
① 이천휴게소 (중부고속도로 통영방향)
1970년대 생활상을 엿볼 수 있는 휴게소다. 건물 3동을 구멍가게·영화관·헌책방처럼 꾸몄다. 추억 속 소품을 보고 있으면 살기 팍팍했던 옛날이 자연스레 떠오른다. 이를테면 구멍가게 안에는 ‘왕자표 크레파스’가 있다. 70∼80년대 초등학교에 다녔다면 한번쯤 사서 그려봤던 크레파스다. 주번 완장도 보이고, 로터리형 채널이 달린 TV도 눈에 띈다. 딱지도 많이 보인다.
구멍가게 옆 영화관에는 ‘정무문’ 포스트가 붙어 있다. 금세라도 이소룡이 쌍절곤을 휘두르며 튀어나올 것 같다. 헌책방에는 도덕·산수 등 옛날 교과서가 있다. 물지게·홍두깨·다듬이돌 등을 직접 체험할 수도 있다. 경기도 하남 동서울 톨게이트에서 약 40㎞ 내려가면 나온다. 이천을 대표하는 음식 중 하나인 소머리국밥(8000원)이 맛있다.
② 죽암휴게소 (경부고속도로 서울방향)
애견 인구 1000만 명 시대에 맞춰 애완견을 위한 공간을 만들어 놓았다. 이름하여 ‘멍멍파크’를 마련한 휴게소는 죽암휴게소와 덕평휴게소(영동고속도로)다. 덕평휴게소는 유료(1만원)인 반면 죽암은 무료다. 멍멍파크에는 장애물·나무계단 등 애완견을 위한 운동시설 8개가 있다. 껌·닭갈비 모양의 스틱(1000원), 양고기·닭고기 캔(2000원) 등 애견용품도 판다.
운동이 끝난 뒤에는 멍멍파크 주변에 마련된 ‘숨 쉬는 나무길’을 걸어도 좋다. 100m 남짓한 산책로에 데크로드가 깔려있다. 소나무·단풍나무·벚나무 등을 빼곡히 심어 햇볕이 한 줌도 들어오지 않을 만큼 울창하다. 산책로에는 군데군데 나무의자와 나무그네도 있어 쉬어가도 좋다. 대전IC를 지나 서울방향으로 20㎞쯤 올라가면 있다. 대표 음식은 돌솥비빔밥(6500원).
③ 탄천휴게소 (천안논산고속도로 논산방향)
충남 공주시 탄천면에 있다. 옛 백제 땅에 자리한 휴게소여서 백제의 역사를 한눈에 살필 수 있는 ‘부여 홍보관’을 설치했다. 지난해 7월 충남 공주·부여, 전북 익산 등에 있는 ‘백제 역사유적지구’가 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정되면서 탄천휴게소를 찾는 사람도 부쩍 늘어났단다. 에스컬레이터를 타고 2층으로 올라가면 홍보관이 나온다. 실내 중앙에 백제를 대표하는 문화제 백제금동대향로(국보287호)가 있다. 물론 모형이다. 향로 주위로 궁남지·정림사지5층석탑·부소산·낙화암 등 백제 유적의 사진과 설명문이 있다.
부여 홍보관 옆에는 수유실도 있고, 2층 전망대 식당에서는 날씨가 좋은 날 멀리 계룡산도 볼 수 있다. 휴게소와 공주 장선리 청동기 유적지가 산책로로 연결돼 있다. 추천 메뉴는 왕갈비탕(1만원).
④ 정읍휴게소 (호남고속도로 순천방향)
정읍휴게소 화장실은 모두 2억8000만원을 들인 리모델링을 마치고 지난 7월 재개장했다. 고급스런 이미지도 주목을 받았지만, 화장실마다 콘셉트가 달라 더욱 화제가 됐다. 예를 들어 여자 화장실은 영화 ‘로마의 휴일’이 콘셉트다. 벽에는 영화 장면을 캡처한 액자를 걸어 놓았고, 입구에는 영화에 등장하는 사자상도 있다.
남자 화장실은 어른용과 어린이용이 따로 있는데, 어린이 화장실의 콘셉트가 ‘아폴로 11호’다. 화장실을 우주선처럼 만들었다. 화장실 칸마다 ‘지구(EARTH)’‘토성(SATURN)’ 등 이름도 붙였다. 리모델링을 계획할 때 할리우드 영화 ‘마션’이 인기를 끌어 우주를 콘셉트로 정했다고 한다. 전북 정읍IC로 나가기 5분쯤 전에 있다. 내장산 한우를 쓴 한우뚝배기불고기(8000원)가 인기 메뉴다.
⑤ 진안마이산휴게소 (익산포항고속도로 양방향)
전북 진안에 있는 휴게소로 주변 경관이 뛰어나다. 휴게소에 들어서면 진안의 명산 마이산(678m)이 한눈에 들어온다. 마이산을 더 잘 보려면 휴게소 왼쪽 동산 위에 있는 전망대에 오르면 된다. 나무 계단이 깔려 있어 오르기 편하다. 전망대 중앙에 마이산을 형상화한 청동조각품이 있고 뒤편으로 정자 ‘마이정’이 있다. 마이정에 걸터앉아 마이산을 보고 있으면 장거리 운전의 피로가 싹 씻겨지는 듯하다.
전망대에는 아가지기한 볼거리도 많다. ‘사랑의 우체통’은 느린 우체통이다. 편지와 함께 봉투에 배달을 원하는 날짜를 적으면 그 날짜에 맞춰 발송해 준다. ‘사랑의 자물쇠’와 소망을 비는 돌탑도 있다. 진안에서 생산한 엄나무·버섯 등을 넣고 얼큰하게 끓인 엄나무 닭개장(7000원)이 가장 잘 팔리는 음식이다.
⑥ 평창휴게소 (영동고속도로 강릉방향)
평창휴게소는 2개월의 리모델링 공사 끝에 7월 21일 다시 문을 열었다. 겨울올림픽의 고장답게 휴게소 테마도 겨울올림픽으로 잡았다. 휴게소 곳곳에서 겨울올림픽 관련 그림이나 장비를 볼 수 있다. 올림픽 마스코트를 그려넣은 건물 기둥은 물론이고, 편의점 진열대에도 올림픽 종목에 관한 설명이 붙어 있다. 화장실은 더 재미있게 만들었다. 여자화장실에는 스키와 스노보드·아이스하키 등의 장비를 전시해 놓았다. 신형진 소장은 “여자가 남자보다 겨울올림픽에 관심이 적은 것 같아 일부러 전시했다”고 밝혔다. 남자화장실 앞에는 큼지막한 스키 점프대가 그려져 있다. 그림 앞에 서서 사진을 찍으면 공중을 나는 스키 점프 선수처럼 나온다. 남·여 화장실 내 벽면과 바닥은 온통 스키·피겨스케이팅·봅슬레이 등 올림픽 종목이 그려져 있다. 인기 메뉴는 표고버섯우렁된장찌개(6000원).
⑦ 단양휴게소 (중앙고속도로 부산방향)
“짜장면 시키신 분∼.” 충북 단양휴게소에 가면 쉽게 들을 수 있는 말이다. ‘휴게소에서 웬 짜장면?’이라고 할지 모르겠다. 그러나 단양휴게소에서는 진짜로 음식을 배달해 준다. 휴게소 뒤에 마련된 힐링테마파크 입구에 정자가 있다. 정자에서 전화(043-423-5401)를 하면 음식을 배달해 준다. 배달 가능한 메뉴는 양푼이비빔밥(5500원)·짜장면(4000원)·아메리카노(4100원)·카페라떼(4600원) 등 4가지다.
안기성 소장은 “손님이 재미삼아 주문을 많이 한다”고 말했다. 평일 오전 9시부터 오후 4시까지만 배달이 가능하다. 공원 산책로를 따라 설치된 ‘108염주 장승도사’ ‘머털도사’ ‘거북이도사’등 익살스러운 모습의 나무조각을 보면 저절로 웃음이 나온다. 야생화공원도 있는데 추석전후로 구절초가 만개할 것으로 보인다. 추천 메뉴는 단양 특산물 6쪽 마늘을 넣은 약초 갈비탕(6000원).
⑧ 화서휴게소 (당진영덕고속도로 상주방향)
아이들이 좋아하는 휴게소다. 캐릭터 인형으로 꾸민 ‘캐릭터 테마공원’ 덕분이다. 공원 입구에 네덜란드 풍차가 돌고, 풍차 주변으로 빨강·파랑·노랑 등 여러 색깔의 바람개비가 돈다. 꽃밭을 지나면 다양한 동물 캐릭터가 아이들을 반긴다. 귀여운 코알라는 나무에 매달려 있고, 미어캣(사진 왼쪽)이 잔디밭에서 두발을 곧추 세우고 경계 태세를 취하고 있다. 주변에 있는 일곱 난장이는 익살스러운 표정으로 백설공주를 기다리는 듯하다. 길가에는 큼지막한 악어가 입을 쩍 벌리고 있어 아이들이 깜짝 놀란다. 돌아나오는 길 끝에 연못이 있는데, 폭포수 아래로 오리와 수달이 노닐고 있다. 조롱박·울타리콩 등으로 꾸민 ‘사랑터널’도 있다. 경북 상주에 있다. 능이버섯이 들어간 국밥(7000원)이 인기다.
⑨ 현풍휴게소 (중부내륙고속도로지선 현풍방향)
휴게소와 연결된 동산에 수령 500년이 넘는 느티나무 한 그루가 있다. 긴 세월 동안 휴게소 인근 마을 성하리의 수호신 역할을 한 당산나무다. 그래서 공원 이름도 ‘500년 느티나무 이야기’다. 공원에 들어서면 삼각형 모양의 작은 집이 눈에 들어온다. 서너 명이 들어갈 수 있는 작은 도서관(사진 왼쪽)이다. 도서관 옆에는 솟대도 서 있고, 하트·삼각형 등 다양한 모양의 새집도 모여 있다. LED 조명으로 장식한 느티나무 아래에는 느린 우체통과 소망등, 프러포즈 다리가 있다. 프러포즈 다리는 커플이 함께 올라가야 음악과 조명이 반짝인다. 산책로에 쉼터 겸 전망대가 있는데 차를 마시면서 낙동강을 내려다볼 수 있다. 대구시 달성군 현풍면에 있다. 대표 음식은 한우곰탕(1만원).
⑩ 문산휴게소(남해고속도로 순천방향)
경남 진주시 문산읍에 있는 휴게소다. 휴게소 공원 이름이 ‘소망등 테마파크’다. 진주의 대표
적인 축제인 유등축제에서 착안했다. 이름에 걸맞게 공원에는 소망등 수백 개가 달려 있다. ‘우리 가족 건강·화목’ ‘남편 사업 대박’ ‘축구 국가대표 발탁’ 등의 소망이 깨알같이 적혀 있다. 식당에 있는 노란 종이에 글귀를 적어 놔두면 휴게소 측에서 나중에 소망등에 달아준다. 무료다.
소망등 앞에 있는 분수에서 행운의 동전 던지기를 할 수 있다. 분수에 모인 동전은 1년에 한 번 장애인복지센터 등에 전달한다. 지난해 약 60만원이 모였다고 한다. 분수에 들어갈 수 있다. 바닥에 울퉁불통 돌이 깔려 있는 지압분수여서 운전의 피로를 풀 수 있다. 된장찌개비빔밥(8000원)은 3인의 전문가로 구성된 한국도로공사 음식 평가단이 선정한 전국 휴게소 음식 ‘베스트 10’에 뽑힌 메뉴다.
