South Korea and China Building Stronger Relations
Lee Joung-bin, minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, announced that South Korea and China have decided to set up dedicated telephone lines to discuss primary matters between the two countries at any time.Lee, during his visit to China, suggested to his receptive Chinese counterpart, foreign minister Tang Jiaxuan, a diplomatic telephone "hotline" between South Korea and China similar to that between the United States and Japan.
The Korean minister disclosed China's intentions to support South Korea for the post of chairperson to the 56th convening of the UN General Assembly in 2001. Chinese support would be very instrumental in the appointing of a South Korean to the position.
Also of note was Lee's expression of Korea's desire to establish a consulate in Guangzhou, much to Tang's approval.
