President Kim Heads for UN Millennium Summit in New York

President Kim Dae-jung leaves for New York on September 5 to attend the UN's Millennium Summit, to take place at the UN headquarters in New York September 6-8.

President Kim will give a keynote speech at the summit, to be attended by 163 member nations, titled 'An Age of Peace and Leap Forward on the Korean Peninsula.'

In the speech Kim will present his vision of a new era of peace and reconciliation between the two Koreas, and will look to gain the support of the international community.

On September 6, he will meet with Kim Yong-nam, chairman of the North Korean Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, to review developments in inter-Korean relations since the historic June 15 inter-Korean summit.

President Kim will hold a series of bilateral talks with U.S. President Bill Clinton, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 7 and 8. The talks will center on constructing a secure peace on the Korean Peninsula with international cooperation. The president will explain methods of replacing the current cease-fire treaty with a permanent peace, agreed by both Koreas through the four-party talks mechanism, and supported by the United States and China.
