New Probes of Bankruptcies
The Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation will begin investigations Tuesday into the problems at Kohap Corp., a textile manufacturer, and the role of founder Kim Woo-choong's wife in the collapse of the Daewoo Group.
The management and operations of Kohap will be scrutinized to see how its debt load came to exceed its total assets.
The investigations into Daewoo are expected to target both Mr. Kim and his wife, Jung Hee-ja. Ms. Jung had been excluded from past inspections because there was no documentation linking her to the fall of the conglomerate. But the agency said that it now has evidence that Ms. Jung had both direct and indirect influence in the management of Daewoo. Ms. Jung is said to have assets of tens of billions of won (tens of millions of dollars) after selling the Hilton Hotel in Seoul and through shares she owns in a golf course.
