Health Fees to Rise As Coverage Drops
Beginning this year, not only breadwinners but also working household members must pay medical insurance fees, the National Health Insurance Corporation announced Thursday.Local medical insurance providers will begin collecting such fees from about 650,000 persons now listed as dependents on insurance records. The move is an attempt to shore up the insurance plan; the national corporation estimates that it will collect about 150 billion won ($120 million) from the new fees.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare also reported that payments for prescribed drugs through the insurance plan will drop 14 percent beginning in March. "The national health insurance corporation will save 90 billion won a year when we reduce the fees," a ministry official said.
