Phone radiation to be monitored
The Ministry of Information and Communication said yesterday it would require cutting-edge mobile phones to go through radiation inspections. Handsets that support IMT-2000, or third-generation mobile services, will soon hit the market, and the penetration of personal digital assistant phones is also increasing. The ministry is preparing to set radiation safety standards for the new technology, it said, including specific absorption rates. Cell phones currently have to meet simple health safety standards that do not include radiation exposure. The ministry will also review related laws, predicting that a variety of mobile handsets will soon be developed for the market.
