[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Plaza for the people

Seoul Plaza, located right in front of City Hall, is opening to the public on Saturday. In a city that is always full of cars, it’s wonderful that there’ll be an open plaza in the heart of Seoul.
But it’s confusing when we see that the discussions on the use of the new plaza are still going on. It seems the discussion all began when the city tried to enact an ordinance that makes reservations necessary to use the plaza for a specific purpose, and sometimes usage fees are charged. This has not been well received by non-governmental organizations.
The plaza is a place that Seoulites should be able to enjoy freely. Whether it is for an appointment or having refreshments, it should be accessible by anyone who lives in Seoul. I’m sure that this is what most residents of the city have in mind for the new plaza.
Seoul’s city government has already enacted an ordinance for managing Yeouido Park, and as a result people wishing to use the park for special interests must obtain permission and pay a fee.
The city must come up with a safety device that will ensure that most citizens will not be limited in using the new plaza. Seoul Plaza must be a space where all people can enjoy freedom and latitude of mind.
