Court ruling bars gay marriage case

A court ruled yesterday that a gay couple’s union could not be recognized as a common-law marriage.
Dismissing a case filed by a 45-year-old woman against her female partner, Incheon District Court said the two women’s relationship cannot be defined as a marriage under Korean law ― which means a physical and spiritual union of male and female.
The complainant, identified only as Ms. Kim, filed against a 47-year-old woman, identified as Ms. Yu, claiming that they had lived together for 20 years and maintained a physical relationship. Arguing that this amounted to marriage, Ms. Kim demanded 175 million won ($149,957) of Ms. Yu’s properties plus alimony. Ms. Kim claimed their joint properties were unfairly registered under Ms. Yu’s name. Ms. Yu denied that they had had a marriage.
