Tears and shock on news of failed Olympic try

In a bitter disappointment for both national officials and local residents, Pyeongchang came up four votes short during its second try to host a Winter Olympic Games. The Russian city of Sochi edged out the Korean hopeful for the 2014 Games in a secret ballot among members of the International Olympic Committee yesterday, Korea time, by a vote of 51 to 47.

유치위원회 관계자들과 평창 주민들 모두에게는 너무나 실망스럽게도 평창이 4표 차이로 동계올림픽 유치에 두 번째 실패했다. 한국시각으로 어제 있었던 IOC 위원들의 비밀투표에서 러시아의 소치가 51 대 47의 근소한 차로 한국의 평창을 이기고 2014년 동계올림픽을 개최하는 도시로 선정됐다.
The Koreans were stunned by the result. After IOC President Jacques Rogge read out Sochi’s name, Russian delegates erupted in cheers. Their Korean counterparts bowed their heads; some were in tears.

The voting took place during the IOC General Assembly in Guatemala, and Pyeongchang led the first round with 36 votes, followed by Sochi with 34 and Salzburg, Austria, with 25. The small mountain city of Pyeongchang, located 175 kilometers (110 miles) east of Seoul, had hoped to bring Korea its first Winter Olympics ever.

2003년에는 3표 차이로 2010년 동계올림픽 유치권을 캐나다의 밴쿠버에게 넘겨줬다. 흑해의 휴양도시인 소치는 러시아의 첫 번째 동계올림픽을 개최하게 됐다. 러시아는 겨울 스포츠 강국으로 소련시절 때부터 포함하면 293개의 동계올림픽 메달을 차지했다. 이에 비해 한국은 31개의 메달을 따냈다.
Pyeongchang's pitch to the committee focused on the idea that the Olympics would help bring peace and reconciliation to the divided Korean Peninsula. Pyeongchang officials also hoped that hosting the Winter Olympics would give a boost to winter sports in Asia. Japan staged the Winter Olympics in 1972 and 1998, but all other winter games have taken place in either North America or Europe.

It appears that Russian President Vladimir Putin's personal appearance in Guatemala and his pledge to spend $12 billion in public funds to develop Sochi into a world-class winter sports center swayed the vote. In a formal presentation, Putin "guaranteed" real snow and no traffic jams for 2014.

블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령이 직접 과테말라를 방문해서 소치를 세계수준의 겨울 스포츠 센터로 개발하는데 120억 달러를 투자하겠다고 공약한 것이 투표를 소치로 기울게 한 것 같다. 공식 설명회에서 푸틴은 2014년에는 교통체증은 없고 진짜 눈만 있을 것이라고 장담했다.
Both President Roh Moo-hyun and Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer also flew to Guatemala to lobby for their candidates. It was the first time three heads of state appeared for the run-up to an Olympic vote.
