Lotus flowers stir ancient memories

The lotus has long been associated with enlightenment and Buddhism in this country.
No matter how often you see the flower in full bloom, the feeling of enchantment remains. It’s an sight to watch the cycle of a lotus blossoming at the crack of dawn and fading as the sun sets.

To the people of this small town, the lotus is more than just a flower floating on a pond. It is strongly redolent of their identity and history.

이 작은 도시의 사람들에게, 연꽃은 단순히 연못에 핀 한송이 꽃 그 이상이다. 연꽃은 그들의 존재와 역사를 떠오르게 한다.
Many artifacts dating back to the Baekje era two thousand years ago were decorated with lotus designs, from tiles on the walls of royal tombs to the base of a famous wooden incense burner.

Buyeo, the former capital of Baekje, is holding a lotus festival starting today through Aug. 3 at Seodong Park, which is about 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) south of the town center.

고대 백제의 수도였던 부여는 오늘부터 시작해 8월3일까지 서동공원에서 연꽃 축제를 연다. 서동공원은 도심에서 남쪽으로 1km 정도 떨어져 있다.
This year is the festival’s sixth anniversary and a variety of lotus flowers will decorate the ponds.
It doesn’t cost you anything to enter and you can while away an afternoon here, walking along the narrow paths that separate the different ponds.

연꽃 축제는 올해로 6회째로 다양한 연꽃들이 연못을 장식한다. 오후 한때 공원에 들어와 연못을 가르는 좁은 길을 걸으면 될 뿐 아무런 비용도 들지 않는다.
Some are pink, others are white. Some are short and there’s one with a long, stretched stem.
The center of this area, a spot that’s hard to miss, is Gungnamji, a pond that has a traditional Korean pavilion called Poryeongjeong standing like a lone lotus in the middle.

분홍색도 있고 흰색도 있다. 작은 것도 있고 가지를 쭉 뻗은 큰 것도 있다. 무엇보다 이곳에서 눈길을 끄는 것은 궁남지로 불리는 연못이다.
연못 한 가운데는 한 떨기 연꽃처럼 전통양식의 포룡정이라는 불리는 정자가 있다.
For many, the scenery here encapsulates the perfect image of an East Asian landscape.
