U.S. agency joins fray over Dokdo

An official United States agency has crashed into the middle of the feud between Seoul and Tokyo over the Dokdo Islets by appearing to lean towards Japan.

미국 연방정부 기관이 일본측 주장에 기우는 듯한 태도로 한국과 일본의 독도 분쟁에 난입했다.

미 지명위원회는 최근 독도의 분류를 한국영토에서 “주권 미지정 지역”으로 변경했다.
The Korean Foreign Ministry held an emergency meeting yesterday and decided to form a task force under a vice minister to deal with the change, said a senior ministry official. An order had already been sent to the South Korean Embassy in Washington on Saturday night to express Seoul’s concerns and investigate the change.

외교부는 어제 긴급회의를 열고 차관 산하에 미국의 독도표기 변경에 대처할 전담팀을 구성키로 결정했다고 외교부 당국자가 말했다. 외교부는 토요일 밤에 워싱턴 주재 한국대사관에 긴급훈령을 보내 이 문제에 대한 한국의 우려를 전달하게 했으며 변경 경위를 조사하도록 지시했다.
The United States has provided a preliminary reply to the Korean Embassy, explaining that the change was made to maintain what it called a neutral position on the islets, according to the Korean government. Seoul said it will try to reverse the new classification.

한국정부 관계자에 따르면, 미국은 한국대사관에 보낸 예비답변에서 독도 문제에 중립적 태도를 유지하기 위해 변경했다고 설명했다. 한국정부는 변경된 분류를 원상회복시키도록 노력하겠다고 말했다.
Until last week, the U.S. Board of Geographic Names stated on its Internet site that the Liancourt Rocks, a term also used to refer to Dokdo, were under the control of South Korea. But yesterday the islets were identified as under “undesignated sovereignty.”

지난주까지 미국 지명위원회는 웹사이트에 독도를 지칭하는 리앙쿠르 암석이 한국의 통제권 아래에 있다고 표시했었다. 그러나 어제 독도는 “주권 미지정”으로 분류되어 있었다.
While it was not immediately known when the change was made, the islets were classified as South Korean territory as late as July 17. The board is an agency that aims at maintaining uniform usage of geographic names throughout the U.S. government.

언제 그렇게 변경됐는지는 곧바로 알려지지 않았지만, 최소한 7월17일까지는 독도는 한국의 영토로 분류돼 있었다. 미국 지명위원회는 미국 정부기관들 사이에 지명표기의 통일성을 유지하기 위한 기관이다.
