선암사와 신발
‘눈물이 나면 기차를 타고 선암사로 가라/선암사 해우소로 가서 실컷 울어라/…/눈물이 나면 걸어서라도 선암사로 가라/선암사 해우소 앞/ 등 굽은 소나무에 기대어 통곡하라.’

In the poem “In ⓐSeonam-sa Temple,” the famous Korean poet Jung Ho-seung writes, “If you want to cry, ⓑride the train to ⓒSeonam-sa Temple / Cry your heart out in ⓓa bathroom at ⓔSeonam-sa Temple /… If the tears suddenly ⓕwelled up in you, take the trouble to walk up to ⓖSeonam-sa Temple / In front of ⓗSeonam-sa’s bathroom/ Cry bitterly, ⓘleaning the bent pine tree.”

ⓐⓒⓔⓖⓗ Seonam-sa Temple → Seonam Temple 한자어 ‘사(sa)’가 ‘절, 사원’의 의미를 지니고 있는 temple과 같은 뜻이므로 -sa삭제
ⓑ ride → take 기차를 탄다는 표현은 동사 ‘take’사용. 참고로 ride는 말이나 자전거 등을 ‘탄다’고 표현할 때 쓰임
ⓓ a → the 선암사에 있는 화장실을 구체적으로 이야기하고 있으므로 정관사 the로 수정
ⓕ welled → well 가정의 상황이 아니라 조건문이므로 동사 원형으로 수정
ⓘ leaning → leaning on ‘~에 기대다’는 “lean on~”으로 표현
그는 “내가 갈 곳은 따로 있다”며 당대 최고의 여배우인 잉그리드 버그먼의 청혼을 물리친 인물이다. 그의 운명은 베트남에서 지뢰를 밟으면서 끝났다. 카파는 많은 후배들이 따랐지만 자신의 기준을 강요한 적은 없다. 다만 매그넘 사무실에 이런 글귀를 남겼다. “좋은 장비를 탐내지 말고 편한 신발을 구하라.” 더 많은 발품을 팔수록, 더 가까이 현장에 다가갈수록 좋은 사진을 구할 수 있다는 자신의 경험이 녹아 있다.

He ⓐrefused to accept the wedding ⓑpropose by a beautiful actress of the day, Ingrid Bergman, saying, “I have a different course ⓒof life.” Unfortunately, His destiny ended when he stepped on a land mine in Vietnam. Even though he had many juniors striving to follow his career path, he never asked them to meet his own standard. However, he left the following sentence in for up-and-coming photographers: “Don’t be greedy for good equipment, but ⓓseek for comfortable shoes.” He tried to convey that as he worked harder and got closer to the scene, he succeeded in taking better photos.

ⓐ refused to accept → refused 의미상 불필요한 to accept를 삭제하여 간략한 표현으로 수정
ⓑ propose → proposal 명사형 proposal로 수정. 참고로 propose는 ‘제안하다’라는 동사임
ⓒ of → in 삶 ‘안’에서의 의미이므로 전치사 ‘in’으로 수정
ⓓ seek for → seek 문맥상 실제로 신발을 구하라는 내용이므로 seek을 타동사로 써서 다음에 얻고자 하는 대상이 목적어로 바로 와야 함. 참고로 seek for는 무언가를 추구하는 상태로 ‘신발을 추구하라’는 의미가 되어 어색
