케냐의 무코고도 부족은 자녀가 병이 났을 때 아들보다는 딸을 돌보는 데 더 많이 신경을 쓴다. 덕분에 네 살이 되기까지 여아들은 남아들보다 더 많이 살아남는다. 아들은 무코고도의 가난함을 물려받지만 딸들은 부자인 삼부루·마사이 남자들의 집으로 시집가서 더 잘살 수 있다는 생각 때문이다.
