11th hour deal saves live WBC coverage

오늘 저녁 6시30분에 시작하는 월드베이스볼클래식 한국-대만전은 KBS, MBC, SBS 등 주요 공중파 방송을 통해 생중계된다. 하지만 TV 생중계는 하마터면 무산될 뻔했다.
IB Sports, a local sports agency and the holder of the broadcasting rights, and the networks, represented by KBS, reached an 11th-hour deal yesterday to put Korean games live on network television. Their negotiations had stalled for most of the week, and as recently as yesterday morning, both sides said their talks had collapsed and watching live games would be difficult.

한국 스포츠 기획사로서 WBC 한국 중계권을 갖고 있는 IB스포츠, 그리고 KBS가 대표 협상자로 나선 방송사들은, 어제 오후 극적으로 한국전의 지상파 생중계에 합의했다. 협상은 이번 주 내내 진척을 보이지 못했으며, 어제 아침까지만 해도 양측은 협상이 결렬됐기 때문에 생중계는 힘들 것이라는 입장이었다.
Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. IB’s initial offer was $3 million, which was whittled down to $2.5 million. KBS had maintained that the networks would not pay more than $1.3 million.

합의된 액수는 아직 공개되지 않았다. IB스포츠는 애초 300만 달러를 제시했다가, 이를 250만 달러로 낮췄다. KBS는 "방송사들이 130만 달러 이상은 지불할 수 없다"고 주장해왔다.
In its press release, IB Sports said it took “a major financial blow” but it had to cater to the eager, not to mention angry, public who demanded both sides to find the middle ground.
IB’s vice president Kim Jung-hwan said IB sold rights to other media “to help cover our loss,” and live games will be available on all-sports cable station Xports, on a video-sharing Web site Mgoon.com, and on mobile phones.

IB스포츠는 보도자료를 통해 “재정적으로 큰 손실을 감수했다”면서도 “IB 스포츠와 방송사들 모두, 협상 타결을 갈망하는 국민의 요구를 저버릴 수 없었다”고 밝혔다. IB스포츠 김정환 부사장은 “손실을 줄이기 위해 지상파 방송사 외의 다른 매체에도 중계권을 판매했다”도 말했다. 이에 따라 케이블채널인 엑스포츠, 동영상 공유 웹사이트인 엠군닷컴, 그리고 휴대전화를 통해서도 생중계가 이루어진다.

All this in a country that won the baseball gold medal at the Beijing Olympics last year and where baseball has been the most popular professional sport over the past quarter century.

한국전이 너무 임박한 상태라 한국전을 TV로 생중계 하는 게 불가능하지 않을까 하는 우려도 컸다. 한국이 지난해 베이징 올림픽 야구 종목에서 금메달을 땄고, 지난 사반세기 동안 한국에서 가장 인기 있는 프로스포츠가 야구였음을 감안하면 납득이 가지 않는 대목이다.
In the inaugural WBC in 2006, Korea defied the odds and reached the semifinals.
And with the nation coming off the equally surprising gold medal-winning performance in Beijing, expectations for the national baseball team have soared and the local media have been carrying saturated coverage for the better part of the late winter.
