로켓
인류의 많은 발명품이 그랬던 것처럼 로켓 역시 중국에서 먼저 개발됐다. 1232년 몽골군의 침략에 맞서 사용했다는 기록이 전해 오는 ‘비화창(飛火槍)’을 로켓의 시초로 본다. 이는 대형 화살에 화약이 가득 담긴 통을 매달고 여기에 불을 붙여 적진을 향해 쏘는 형태였다. 지금도 중국어로 로켓을 불화살이란 뜻의 ‘화전(火箭)’이라 쓰는 연유다. 그냥 화살에 불을 붙여 팔 힘으로 쏘는 게 아니라 화약이 맹렬히 타면서 연소가스를 분출할 때 생기는 추진력으로 날아가는 것이니 로켓의 원리와 일치한다.

당시 영국 공군사령관이던 R V 존스는 “영국 정치인들은 그 위협에 넋을 잃었다. 심리적 이유로 인해 항공기로 운반되는 5t의 폭탄보다 로켓으로 운반되는 1t의 폭탄이 훨씬 더 겁에 질리게 했다”고 술회했다. V-2는 오늘날 우주발사로켓과 탄도미사일의 원형이 됐다.
