All-Star Game: Magic gives Dream nightmares

The Magic team defeated the Dream team, 108-102, at the KBL All-Star Game yesterday, thanks to the strong play of Moon Tae-jong and Kim Hyo-bum.

Mobis Pheobus point guard Yang Dong-geun of the Dream team earned the most fan votes leading up to the All-Star Game but Kim Hyo-bum of the SK Knights and Moon Tae-jong of the ET Land Elephants came up big for the Magic in the game featuring the very best of Korean basketball.

The Dream team put out a starting five of Kim Hyun-joon, Yang Dong-geun, Moon Tae-young, Rodrique Benson and Kim Joo-sung, while the Magic team featured in its starting lineup Jeon Tae-pung, Moon Tae-jong, Kim Hyo-bum, Lee Seung-joon and Ha Seung-jin.

Moon Tae-jong led the Magic team with 23 points and also added six rebounds and four assists. Moon scored 11 points in the fourth quarter alone to help his team hold off a surging Dream team.

However, it was Kim Hyo-bum who earned the Most Valuable Player award with 15 points and four assists in 17 minutes. Kim earned 30 of 66 total media votes to win the award.

Rodrique Benson of Mobis Pheobus led the Dream team with 23 points and 11 rebounds and Lee Dong-joon of the Daegu Orions chipped in with 22 points and eight rebounds.

Earlier in the day, Lee Seung-joon of the Samsung Thunders won the slam-dunk contest while Robert Cummings of the LG Sakers was named the top dunker in the overseas player category. Byun Hyun-soo of the LG Sakers won the skills challenge while Park Ji-hyun of the Dongbu Promy won the 3-point contest.

Lee Seung-joon played a big role in the Rookie Challenge - pitting the top rookies against sophomores - scoring 31 points and adding 15 rebounds for the sophomore squad to earn the game MVP award. The sophomores defeated the rookies 105-97.

The Rookie Challenge MVP honor is Lee’s second consecutive award after winning it last year as a rookie. He earned all 32 of the media votes this year.

Also, the 2011 KBL amateur draft will be held this afternoon. Chung-Ang University center Oh Se-geun is expected to go first overall.

Oh helped Chung-Ang win the national title this season and is considered one of the best big men to hit the draft in recent years. Oh’s teammates Kim Sun-hyung and Choi Jin-soo are expected to be drafted right after Oh at No. 2 and 3.

2011년 프로농구 올스타전 ‘별중의 별’은 김효범(28·SK·사진)이었다. 김효범은 30일 잠실 실내체육관에서 열린 프로농구 올스타전에서 기자단 투표 66표 가운데 30표를 얻어 최우수선수(MVP)로 뽑혔다. 김효범은 장내 아나운서가 자신의 이름을 부르자 “나? 정말?”이라고 눈을 동그랗게 뜨며 놀란 표정을 지었다. 그는 “전혀 예상하지 못했던 결과라 머리가 백지상태다. 문태종, 이승준 형에게 미안하다”고 말했다. 김효범은 2009년 올스타전에서 3점슛과 덩크슛 콘테스트 우승을 휩쓴 적이 있다. 그는 이날 올스타전 MVP까지 받으면서 ‘올스타전의 사나이’로 떠올랐다.

김효범은 매직팀(삼성·SK·인삼공사·전자랜드·KCC) 선발로 나서 15점·4도움을 기록했다. 매직팀은 드림팀(동부·모비스·LG·오리온스·KT)을 108-102로 이겼다.

김효범은 1쿼터 도중 자유투를 두 개를 얻자 자주 쓰는 오른손이 아닌 왼손으로 슛을 성공시켰다. 두 번째 자유투를 던질 때는 눈을 감고 던졌다. 공은 림을 외면했지만 관중은 환호를 보냈다. 올스타전에서만 볼 수 있는 재미있는 퍼포먼스였다. MVP 상금 300만원을 받은 김효범은 “상금을 모두 부모님께 드리겠다”고 말했다. …
