Suwon knocks off Seoul on opening weekend

Korean professional football’s biggest rivalry - defending champion FC Seoul and the Suwon Samsung Bluewings - played out in exciting fashion yesterday, with Suwon beating home-team Seoul, 2-0, in front of a raucous opening-weekend crowd of 51,606 at World Cup Stadium.

Suwon’s surprise victory came thanks to better teamwork from its newly signed players, as Seoul and its star foreign players failed to generate much on offense.

The two sides played 41 minutes of deadlocked football until Suwon, which was seventh place in the K-League last year, broke the early tie with an Alexander Geynrikh goal.

The Uzbek received a long pass from forward Yeom Ki-hun and showed off his skills by trapping the ball with his chest and maneuvering past Seoul defender Hyun Young-min to score the first goal of the game, kicking the ball into the net opposite Seoul goalkeeper Kim Yong-dae.

Suwon’s second goal came 15 minutes into the second half when midfielder Oh Jang-eun received a cross from forward Choi Sung-kuk and scored on an impressive header.

With two goals already in the bag, Suwon continued to play aggressively while limiting Seoul’s chances. The home team tried its best to come back, but there just wasn’t enough time for last year’s K-League champion.

The two sides are considered top contenders to win the league this year.

K-League’s opening weekend featured seven other matches - four on Saturday and three others yesterday.

The battle of the Jeolla provinces between the Chunnam Dragons and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors was hard fought as Chunnam beat Jeonbuk 1-0 yesterday on a goal by forward Gong Young-sun. Also yesterday, last year’s K-League runner-up Jeju United edged Busan I’Park 2-1, while Daejeon Citizen beat Ulsan Hyundai 2-1 in Ulsan.

Saturday’s openers were just as exciting. More than 36,000 came out to Gwangju World Cup Stadium to see Park Ki-dong score two goals in the first half, which gave Gwangju FC an early advantage in its 3-2 win over Daegu FC.

Other games on Saturday included a 1-1 draw between the Pohang Steelers and Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, a 1-0 victory for Gyeongnam FC over Gangwon FC and a Sangju Sangmu Pheonix domination over Incheon United, 2-0. Pohang had a huge chance to spark a comeback in the second half when they received a free penalty kick, but failed to convert, sealing their fate.

수원 삼성이 라이벌 FC 서울과의 대결에서 기선 제압에 성공했다. 수원은 6일 서울월드컵경기장에서 열린 2011 시즌 프로축구 K-리그 개막전에서 서울에 2-0으로 완승했다.

황보관 서울 감독은 지난 4일 공식 기자회견에서 “재미있는 축구”를 강조하며 스코어를 3-2로 예상했다. 반면 윤성효 수원 감독은 “개막전이자 원정 경기다. 내용보다 결과가 중요하다”며 1-0으로 내다봤다. 결국 윤성효 감독의 수비전술이 조직적으로 준비되지 않은 서울을 압도했다.

윤 감독은 역대 개막전 최다인 5만1606명의 관중이 입장한 서울의 안방 잔치에서 확실한 악역을 자처했다. 서울의 공세를 예상한 그는 스리백 카드를 꺼냈다. 양측면 윙백까지 5명이 수비라인을 구축했다. 그것도 일(一)자로 늘어선 지역방어 중심의 스리백이 아니라 가운데 수비수가 뒤로 처지는 스위퍼 시스템을 들고나왔다. 1990년대 후반 유행이 다한 대인방어 위주의 고전적 전술이었다.

효과는 경기 초반부터 발휘됐다. 수원 수비수 곽희주와 마토가 서울 주공격수 데얀을 1대1로 마크하면서 고립시키는 데 성공했다.

경기는 수원이 의도한 지구전으로 전개됐다. 황보관 감독은 경기 전 “수원의 역습을 조심해야 한다”고 경계했다. 결국 서울은 알고도 당했다. 전반 40분 미드필드 왼쪽에서 염기훈이 반대쪽 전방으로 롱 크로스를 올렸다. 볼을 잡은 게인리흐는 서울 수비수 현영민을 개인기로 따돌린 뒤 오른발 슛으로 결승골을 터뜨렸다.

게인리흐는 K-리그 데뷔전에서 골을 기록하며 강력한 인상을 남겼다. 우즈베키스탄 대표 선수인 그는 지난 1월 28일 카타르 아시안컵 한국과의 3·4위전에서 두 골을 넣어 ‘한국 킬러’로 떠올랐다. 이후 국내 에이전트 30여 명이 접촉에 나선 결과 게인리흐는 지난달 27일 수원 유니폼을 입었다.

수원 오장은은 후반 15분 최성국의 크로스를 헤딩골로 연결시켜 쐐기골을 터뜨렸다. 수원은 서울이 연고지를 옮긴 2004년 이후 맞대결에서 10승8무9패로 앞서 나갔다.
