In pursuit of ‘Korean Dream’ at university

A mother of two elementary school children, Zamgang Miamdendev has been a full-time parent for the past 11 years in Korea. Now the 35-year-old Mongolian-born woman is pursuing her Korean Dream at Ewha Woman’s University.
On Feb. 25, Miamdendev was admitted to the university’s Department of Health Education and Management on a scholarship through the school’s Ewha Global Partnership Program, which supports women born in developing countries.
Miamdendev, who worked as a nurse in Mongolia until she married a Korean in 1999, had long-considered furthering her studies in medicine. But after arriving in Korea and giving birth to two children, she had no time to devote to university. She couldn’t read or write Hangeul until her first child turned 5. That’s when she decided to learn the language.
Miamdendev completed a six-month Korean program at Seoul National University of Education. After becoming comfortable speaking, opportunities presented themselves. She volunteered as a visiting counselor for migrant women. And since 2006, she has volunteered as a medical interpreter for foreign laborers at the Korea Federation for HIV/AIDS Prevention.
One of the most difficult situations migrant women encounter while living in Korea, said Miamdendev, is a lack of medical information on pregnancy. For foreign wives, their Korean husbands are their only source of information. However, information on giving birth was not a topic most husbands could help with, which is why Miamdendev decided to continue her studies in the field of medicine.
“New health care policies should be established in this era of multicultural families,” said Miamdendev.
In order to focus on her studies, Miamdendev decided to stay at a university dormitory. She says she plans to spend weekdays at school and weekends at home. “I’m not sure if I’m doing the right thing,” admitted Miamdendev, adding that a mother’s development leads to better childcare.
Across the country, more foreigners are living their Korean Dream.
Dilshod Gulamov, a 26-year-old from Uzbekistan, graduated from Seoul National University’s college of Business Administration last month. Gulamov got a job at Hanwha Group, which will pay him 10 times more than college graduates in his home country.
He said his key to success was going abroad at an early age.
At 17, Gulamov moved to Korea to attend Gyeonggi Mec-Tec High School on a scholarship from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. “As I came to Korea early as a high school student and was educated in the Korean language, I think I was able to learn and understand Korean culture quickly and deeply,” said Gulamov.
Gulamov served as the first foreign president of the student council at Seoul National University.
“Korean companies should utilize more foreign manpower to correspond to a globalized society, while universities recommend foreign students to Korean companies more enthusiastically,” he added.

11년차 몽골 주부 잠강 “이대생 됐어요”
몽골 출신 잠강 니암덴데브(35)는 11년차 주부다. 초등학생인 두 아이의 엄마이기도 하다. 결혼 전에는 간호사였다. 이제는 ‘이대 다니는 여자’가 됐다.
잠강은 지난달 25일 이화여대 보건관리학과에 EGPP(Ewha Global Partnership Program) 장학생으로 입학했다. EGPP는 이화여대가 개발도상국 여성 인재를 지원하는 프로그램이다.
몽골에서 간호대학을 졸업한 그는 1999년 현재의 한국인 남편을 만나 1년 연애 끝에 결혼했다. 처음에는 한국에서 간호학 공부를 계속할 생각이었다. 하지만 아이 둘을 낳아 기르기에 바빴다. 큰애가 다섯 살이 될 때까지 엄마는 한국어 읽고 쓰기가 서툴렀다.
‘이래선 안 되겠다’ 싶었다. 지역센터에 나가 한국어를 배웠고, 서울교대의 이중언어과정(6개월)을 수료했다. 한국어에 익숙해지자 할 수 있는 일이 많아졌다. 이주여성 방문지도사로 봉사하고, 2006년부터는 한국에이즈퇴치연맹에서 외국인 노동자를 대상으로 의료 통역봉사를 했다.
잠강이 본 이주 여성들의 가장 큰 어려움 중 하나는 임신·출산 등 의료 정보의 부족이었다. 이주 여성들에게는 남편이 유일한 대화 상대인 경우가 많은데, 임신과 출산은 남편이 도와줄 수 없는 부분이었다. 간호사 일을 놓은 지 11년 만에 다시 의료 분야의 공부를 결심한 것은 이 때문이었다. “다문화 시대에 맞는 의료정책이 필요하다”는 것이다.
잠강은 학업에 충실하기 위해 기숙사에 입소했다. “절반 정도는 집에서, 나머지는 학교에서 보낼 계획”이라며 “이게 잘하는 짓인가 싶다”며 웃었다. 하지만 엄마가 발전해야 아이들도 잘 키울 수 있다는 것이 잠강의 생각이다. 이주 여성 정치인 1호인 이라 경기도의원, 번역가 이자스민 등 활발히 활동하는 친구들에게서도 용기를 얻었다.
잠강이 대학 입학으로 ‘코리안 드림’을 성취했다면 우즈베키스탄에서 온 질소드 굴라모프(26)는 대학 졸업과 함께 더 큰 꿈을 이뤘다. 지난달 25일 서울대 경영대를 졸업한 굴라모프는 한화그룹에 취직해 본국의 대졸자들보다 10배 정도 많은 급여를 받게 됐다.
그는 자신의 성공 비결을 ‘조기유학’이라고 했다. 17세 때 한국으로 건너와 서울시교육청이 주는 장학금으로 경기기계공고에서 공부를 시작했다. “고등학교 때부터 한국어로 교육 받아 한국의 정서와 문화를 더 깊게 이해할 수 있었던 것 같습니다.”
서울대 초대 외국인학생회장을 지낸 굴라모프는 “취업을 희망하는 유학생들이 정보가 부족해 막막해하는 경우가 많다”며 “한국 기업들이 글로벌시대에 맞게 국제인력을 많이 활용하고, 대학도 외국인 학생을 기업에 적극적으로 추천했으면 한다”고 말했다.
