Fans ready to fill baseball stadiums on opening day

The Korean Baseball Organization is hoping its eight teams can pull in a record 6.6 million fans this season, braking last year’s total of 5.92 million. The 2011 campaign kicks off tomorrow in four cities around Korea. [JoongAng Ilbo]

After 56 preseason games in March, 96,000 fans will cram into four sold-out stadiums tomorrow as the Korea Professional Baseball League begins its 30th season.

This season will see a number of important new rules. Among them, ties will no longer factor into teams’ winning percentages. The change is a significant one, as teams’ winning percentages determine their rank. In the past, ties had been counted as losses.

Another important rule change will extend extra innings in the playoffs from 12 innings to 15.

Moreover, in the playoffs, teams will be permitted to announce their 26-man rosters one day before the first game, giving them more time to select players.

Before the rule change, teams had to unveil their roster three days before the first playoff game and five days prior to first game of the Korean Series.

SK Wyverns

Baseball experts say this season, more than in seasons past, will see parity among six of the eight teams, creating the potential for a tight playoff race.

Nevertheless, last season’s Korean Series champion SK Wyverns are the favorites, along with the Doosan Bears.

The Wyverns, led by manager Kim Sung-keun, have won three of the last four championships. But one day before the season begins, they are already facing challenges. The team finished preseason play in last place and veteran catcher Park Kyung-wan is still recovering from an Achilles injury.

Pundits say the Wyverns’ strong starting rotation might be enough to keep them competitive until Park returns. Former MVP Kim Kwang-hyun and Song Eun-beom already headline the rotation and the team bolstered its pitching by adding last year’s Taiwan Series MVP, Jim Magrane.

“The Wyverns’ weakest position is catcher, but if you know the style of manager Kim Sung-keon, they are at least going to make the playoffs,” said Huh Ku-youn, an MBC commentator.

Doosan Bears

The Bears have upgraded their pitching this year to complement their already-solid offense.

The Seoul-based club brought in Dustin Nippert, a right-hander that played on the MLB’s Texas Rangers the last three years. The 203-centimeter (6 foot 8 inches) hurler impressed in preseason and is expected to strengthen the starting five.

“The Bears is a championship contender,” said Yang Joon-hyuk, an analyst for SBS. “They are well balanced and stacked with good players on their roster.”

Kia Tigers

The 2009 champion Kia Tigers are considered to have the strongest rotation in the league. In addition, the team signed Lee Bum-ho, a third baseman who returned from Japan after having a dreadful season there. The two-time KBO Golden Glove winner had a .391 batting average during the preseason and is expected to bat third in the batting order, ahead of cleanup hitter and former Chicago Cubs first baseman Choi Hee-seop. Kim Sang-hyeon, 2009 MVP, will bat fifth.

“The Tigers have a shot at the title because of their strong pitching,” said Lee Hyo-bong, an analyst for MBC Sports Plus. “The addition of Lee Bum-ho has also boosted the team’s power.”

Samsung Lions, Lotte Giants

Last season’s runner-up, the Samsung Lions, and the fourth-place Lotte Giants are both looking for a fresh start this year with new managers. The Daegu-based Lions hired fan-favorite Ryu Joong-il, while the Giants replaced former Major Leaguer Jerry Royster with Yang Seung-ho.

LG Twins

Most pundits have picked the LG Twins as the dark horse this year. The Twins brought in Dominican Republic pitcher Radhames Liz, whose fastballs regularly reach 100 miles per hour. With foreign pitcher Ben Jukich and former major leaguer Bong Jung-keun, the trio is expected to be a force.

“The Twins have too many variables,” said Lee Yong-chul, an analyst who provides commentary on KBS. “Their performance this season is on the starting pitchers’ shoulders.”

The bottom feeders

Last year’s two worst teams, the Nexen Heroes and Hanwha Eagles, aren’t likely to improve much. Both have emerging young talent, but not enough power to compete with the rest of the league.

The Korean Baseball Organization teams drew 5.92 million fans to their stadiums last year - a single-season record. This year, the KBO is aiming for 6.6 million in attendance.

The KBO announced that all weekday games this season will start at 6:30 p.m., while weekend games will begin at 5.p.m. Only opening weekend and games on Children’s Day will see 2 p.m. starts.

The first pitches will be thrown in four cities at 2 p.m. Defending champion SK Wyverns will host the Nexen Heroes in Incheon, while last season’s runner-up, the Samsung Lions, will travel to Gwangju to face Kia. Also in Saturday’s action, Busan will host the Hanwha Eagles and the Doosan Bears will face the LG Twins in Seoul.

4월의 따사로운 봄 햇살 속에 국내 최고 인기스포츠로 자리 잡은 프로야구가 서른 번째 시즌을 시작한다.

'2011 롯데카드 프로야구'는 2일 오후 2시 잠실구장(두산-LG)과 인천 문학구장(SK-넥센), 부산 사직구장(롯데-한화), 광주구장(KIA-삼성)에서 일제히 개막전을 갖고 6개월간의 대장정에 들어간다.

출범 30년째를 맞은 올 시즌 프로야구는 8개 팀당 133경기, 총 532경기를 펼친 뒤 상위 4팀이 화려한 '가을 잔치'를 펼친다.

올 페넌트레이스의 최대 관심은 '디펜딩 챔피언' SK 와이번스의 독주를 과연 어느 팀이 막아내느냐다.

지난 4년 연속 한국시리즈에 올라 세 번씩이나 우승컵을 차지한 SK는 그야말로 '공공의 적'이다.

또 올 시즌 최고 스타가 누가 될지도 관심거리다.

지난해 7관왕을 차지한 이대호(롯데), '국가대표 에이스' 류현진(한화), '타격기계' 김현수(두산)와 홍성흔(롯데) 등이 MVP 트로피를 향해 뜨거운 경쟁을 펼칠 것으로 보인다.

8개 구단이 그라운드에서 펼치는 치열한 플레이 못지않게 스탠드에서는 응원전으로 후끈 달아오를 전망이다.

시범경기 동안 관중이 40%나 증가한 프로야구는 올 시즌 최초로 '600만 관중시대' 개막을 바라보고 있다.

◇'3강·3중·2약'..SK 독주에 제동 걸리나 = 대다수 전문가는 올 시즌 8개 구단 전력 판도를 절대 강자도, 절대 약자도 없는 혼전 양상이 전개될 것으로 내다보고 있다.

지난 4년간 최강으로 군림했던 SK에서는 '팀 전력의 절반'이라는 베테랑 포수 박경완이 아킬레스건 수술 여파로 개막전에 출전하지 못한다.

지난가을 안면 마비 증세를 보였던 에이스 김광현은 마지막 시범경기에서 불안감을 노출하며 제 컨디션을 찾지 못했다.

겨울 동안 특별한 전력 보강이 없었던 SK는 '캡틴' 김재현이 은퇴했고 유격수 나주환이 입대하는 바람에 오히려 전력이 약화됐다.

반면 '만년 2위'였던 두산 베어스는 최강의 공격력이 건재한 가운데 203㎝의 장신 외국인 투수 더스틴 니퍼트와 일본에서 복귀한 이혜천이 마운드에 가세해 투수력이 한층 강화됐다.

2009년 우승팀인 KIA 타이거즈는 윤석민-아퀼리노 로페즈-트래비스 블랙클리-양현종-서재응-김희걸로 이어지는 최강 선발 마운드를 구축해 SK, 두산과 함께 '빅3'로 평가되고 있다.

화끈한 방망이를 앞세운 롯데 자이언츠와 '필승 마무리' 오승환이 부상에서 회복한 삼성 라이온즈, '용병 원투펀치'를 영입한 LG 트윈스는 '3중'으로 분류되지만, 상위 3팀과는 '종이 한 장' 차이 전력으로 혼전 양상을 벌일 가능성이 크다.

뚜렷한 전력 보강이 없는 넥센 히어로즈와 류현진이 외롭게 버티는 한화 이글스는 하위권을 벗어나기 쉽지 않아 보인다.

◇이대호·류현진 'MVP 경쟁 2라운드' = 지난해 타격 7관왕으로 MVP를 차지한 이대호와 투수 부문 골든글러브 수상자인 류현진은 다시 한번 MVP 경쟁을 벌일 것으로 전망된다.

프로 데뷔 11년째를 맞아 폭풍 같은 방망이를 휘두르는 이대호는 아직 발목 상태가 완전하지 않지만 최근 '50홈런 돌파'를 선언할 만큼 타격에 자신감을 보이고 있다.

또 방어율과 탈삼진에서 독보적인 위력을 발휘하는 류현진은 꼴찌 수준인 팀 전력이 부담스럽지만, 자력으로 20승 고지에 오른다면 6년 만에 MVP를 탈환할 수도 있다.

이대호와 류현진에 이어 SK 에이스 김광현, KIA의 우완 특급 윤석민, '안타 제조기' 김현수·홍성흔도 MVP 타이틀을 노려 볼 후보로 꼽힌다.

◇용병·신인 새 얼굴, 활기 불어넣나 = 올 시즌은 유독 외국인 투수 중에서 눈여겨볼 선수들이 많다.

특히 명예회복을 노리는 LG가 야심 차게 영입한 레다메스 리즈는 시범경기에서 최고시속 160㎞의 강속구를 뿌려 화제의 인물이 됐다.

리즈는 변화구 구사능력이 떨어진다는 지적을 받지만 불 같은 강속구만 제대로 컨트롤한다면 LG를 9년 만에 포스트시즌으로 이끌 '구세주'가 될 수 있다.

두산의 니퍼트와 롯데의 브라이언 코리, SK의 짐 매그레인(SK)도 수준급으로 평가받는다.

지난해까지 미국 메이저리그에서 활동했던 니퍼트는 큰 키에서 내리꽂는 속구가 위협적이고 미국과 일본을 거쳐 한국에 온 노장 코리는 빼어난 제구력이 돋보인다.

김성근 감독이 영입한 매그레인은 지난해 대만 시리즈를 제패하며 최우수선수로 뽑힐 만큼 아시아야구에 익숙하다.

또 일본에서 뛰다 돌아온 내야수 이범호(KIA)와 투수 이혜천(두산)이 어떤 활약을 펼칠지도 관심사다.

신인 중에는 한화의 좌완투수 유창식이 '최대어'로 꼽히지만, 고교시절 혹사한 탓에 아직 몸 상태가 좋지 않은 것이 변수다.

◇600만 관중 시대 열리나 = 8개 구단의 올 시즌 관중 목표치는 총 663만 명이다.

지난해 기록한 역대 최다 관중(592만8천626명)보다 70만 명이나 더 모으겠다는 것이다.

8개 구단 중에서는 대형구장을 홈으로 사용하는 롯데와 두산, LG, SK가 모두 100만 명 이상을 동원하겠다고 공언했다.

2000년대 초반 침체기를 겪었던 프로야구는 2006년 월드베이스볼클래식(WBC)에서 4강, 2008년 베이징올림픽 금메달, 2009년 WBC 준우승 등 국제대회에서 눈부신 성과를 올리면서 최고의 흥행기를 맞았다.

2008년부터 3년 연속 500만 관중을 돌파하며 국내 최고 인기스포츠로 확고히 자리 잡았다.

이런 분위기에 힘입어 올 시범경기에도 지난해보다 40% 이상 증가한 총 25만여 명이 경기장을 찾았다.

올해 프로야구에는 각종 국제대회가 열리고 이상기온이 기승을 부렸던 지난해와 비교하면 특별한 악재가 없다.

이 때문에 '빅마켓' 연고팀인 두산·LG·롯데·SK와 '전국구'인 KIA, 그리고 갤럽의 인기조사에서 2위를 차지한 삼성이 상위 6강을 형성하면 야구팬들의 흥미가 배가돼 한 시즌 600만 관중시대가 무난히 열릴 것으로 예상되고 있다.
