Incheon-Russia connection leads to lit courses

Russia has played a major role in the history of Korea, for better or worse. But many Koreans have shied away from studying Russian subjects.

Incheon’s government is trying to dispel that prejudice. Monday, the Incheon Center For International Cooperation and Exchange started offering a Russian literature class.

And to many people’s surprise, the 8-week, 4,000-won ($3.67) course was fully booked by 20 local residents. The international exchange center said 10 other hopefuls were on the waiting list. Classes are held every Monday.

“I felt we barely had enough time because the students were so enthusiastic about Russian literature,” said Kim Eun-hee, a Russian literature lecturer at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies who teaches the course.

Incheon’s recent Russian connection dates to 2002, when the Incheon Metropolitan Museum discovered the flag of the Russian cruiser Varyag in its vaults.

During the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, the crew of the Russian cruiser decided to scuttle the ship instead of surrendering to the Japanese navy. The ship became a revered symbol of Russian combat valor.

The Japanese navy salvaged the Varyag and recovered its flag in 1905. Incheon’s museum has had the flag since Japan’s defeat at the end of World War II.

The Varyag itself was returned to Russia but later impounded by Britain for unpaid Russian debts.

In 2004, the Russian government built a monument to the ship in Incheon with the agreement of the city government. According to city officials, Russian navy officers visit Incheon every February to remember the Varyag.

At the request of the Russian government, the Varyag flag was exhibited in Russian museums for nine months in 2009. Last November, Incheon leased the flag for two years to the Russian government as a gesture of friendship.

Incheon is preparing more lectures on Russian politics, music and culture to be launched from May to July.

“Russia had a big influence on the Korean Peninsula in terms of the economy and politics, but many Koreans have a negative image of Russia,” said Lee Seung-chang, head of the Incheon international culture exchange center. “The center will help residents to better understand Russia and its culture.”

러시아 궁금하면 인천으로 오세요

러·일전 바랴크함 깃발 대여 계기
문화강좌·영화 상영 등 잇단 행사

18일 오전 인천 연수구 동춘동의 인천시평생학습관 미디어실. 20여 명의 시민들이 ‘명화로 이해하는 러시아인의 삶’이라는 제목의 강의에 빠져 있었다. 인천시국제교류센터가 주관하는 러시아 문화강좌 첫 날이었다. 8회 수강료가 4만원인 유료강좌지만 수강 신청자가 정원을 초과해 10여 명은 대기자 명단에 올라 있다. 첫 강의를 맡은 김은희(한국외국어대 강사)씨는 “수강생들의 관심과 열의가 높아 시간이 부족하다는 느낌이었다”고 말했다. 이 강좌는 다음 달 말까지 매주 월요일마다 열린다.

인천이 한국-러시아 문화교류의 관문으로 떠오르고 있다. 한 세기 전 인천 앞바다에서 침몰한 바랴크함 깃발의 대여를 계기로 인천과 러시아 간의 교류·왕래가 줄을 잇고 있다. 1904년 러·일전쟁 당시 인천 앞바다에서 일본 군함과 전투를 벌이던 바랴크함은 전세가 불리해지자 항복 대신 자폭을 택했다.

2002년 인천시립박물관 수장고에서 바랴크함 깃발이 발견되자 인천시와 러시아의 교류는 확대됐다. 러시아는 2004년 인천 연안부두에 바랴크함 추모비를 세웠다. 이 깃발은 러시아 애국심의 상징이 됐다. 이후 러시아 해군은 매년 2월 인천 앞바다에서 추모행사를 해오고 있다. 2009년 이 깃발은 러시아에 단기 대여돼 9개월간 러시아 전역을 돌며 전시됐다. 지난해 11월 인천시는 바랴크함 깃발을 러시아에 2년간 다시 대여했다. 인천시는 송도국제도시 등 인천경제자유구역에 외국 기업이나 대학들을 많이 유치해야 하는 입장이어서 상호 교류가 가속도를 내고 있다.

인천시 국제교류센터는 러시아 문화강좌 외에도 2개의 또 다른 러시아 강좌를 준비 중이다. 5∼7월 매주 토요일 2시에는 미추홀도서관에서 ‘러시아를 걷다’는 주제의 강좌가 열릴 예정이다. ‘푸틴과 메드베데프’ ‘러시아 음악여행’ ‘인천과 러시아, 숨겨진 이야기’ 등의 내용이다. 7월 한 달 매주 토요일에는 ‘모스크바는 눈물을 믿지 않는다’ ‘러브 오브 시베리아’ 등의 영화를 상영하는 러시아 영화축제가 준비되고 있다.

역사적 유물이나 기록자료의 교류도 활발해질 전망이다. 인천시립박물관은 올해 하반기 중 러시아 내 한국·인천 관련 역사자료 조사반을 파견할 계획이다. 현지 조사 활동은 러시아 연방박물관·해군 중앙박물관·동양박물관·외교문서보관소 등에서 이루어질 예정이다

인천시 국제교류센터는 러시아와의 문화 교류를 지속적으로 이어가기 위해 국내 지자체로서는 처음으로 ‘루스키 미러(러시아 세계)’ 센터의 개설도 준비 중이다. 루스키 미러 센터는 러시아 정부가 소련의 부정적인 이미지를 벗고 러시아 문화를 전파하기 위해 해외에 설립하는 문화원이다.

이승창 인천시 국제교류센터 대표는 “러시아는 정치·경제적으로 한반도에 큰 영향을 미치지만 부정적인 이미지로 남아 있다”며 “문화강좌 등을 통해 시민들이 러시아와 러시아 문화를 올바로 이해할 수 있도록 할 것”이라고 말했다.
