Alliance clinches Suncheon victory

Thanks to a successful electoral alliance among opposition parties, Kim Seon-dong of the Democratic Labor Party won the National Assembly seat for Suncheon, South Jeolla, in Wednesday’s by-election, the first victory for the party in the Jeolla region.

Kim, 44, who had low name recognition in the area, won 36.2 percent of 83,642 votes cast, beating out five independent candidates who had defected from the Democratic Party and another independent candidate.

“My victory in Suncheon shows the effectiveness of alliances of opposition parties,” Kim said on Wednesday.

Democratic Labor Party leader Lee Jung-hee also expressed her delight over the victory, saying, “We have created a new driving force to make a change in the presidential election race in 2012.”

Analysts said the electoral alliance of opposition parties, in which they all supported Kim and didn’t split the vote among candidates, contributed to the minor party’s victory in the Democratic Party’s traditional stronghold, the Jeolla region. Such alliances could be powerful factors in next year’s general and presidential elections, they said.

At the beginning of his campaign, Kim had scant support from the opposition camp. At a campaign event on April 17, which opposition lawmakers were supposed to attend, only the DP’s Chung Dong-young showed up.

The alliance seemed shaky at times, especially when some DP lawmakers made visits to some of Kim’s independent rivals, who had support from some Suncheon-based DP members, analysts said.

But on April 23, the opposition parties came together to support Kim against his five independent rivals at another campaign event.

On April 22, a day when it rained heavily, the DP’s Chun Jung-bae and former Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook campaigned with Kim.

“I will dedicate myself to help improve the economy and build a cooperative relationship with North Korea,” Kim said.

야권연대의 힘 … 민노당, 호남 지역구 첫 당선 전남 순천 김선동

김선동 당선인야권연대의 위력은 거셌다. 4·27 보궐선거에서 야권의 단일 후보로 나선 민주노동당 김선동(44) 후보가 전남 순천에서 당선됐다. 김 당선인은 인지도가 높지 않았으나, 야권연대 후보라는 강점을 살려 승리를 이끌어냈다. 그는 전남과 전북을 통틀어 첫 지역구 민노당 소속 국회의원이 됐다. 김 당선인은 “야권연대와 정권교체의 의지를 보여준 민심의 선택이었다”며 “내년 대선에서 정권교체의 여망을 반드시 실현하겠다”고 말했다.

　순천 보궐선거는 ‘뭉치면 살고 흩어지면 죽는다’는 정치적 금언을 다시 한번 확인했다. 민주당을 탈당한 무소속 후보 간 단일화는 이번 선거전의 최대 변수였으나 결국 실패로 돌아갔다. 민주당의 무공천 방침에 반발해 탈당한 뒤 무소속으로 출마한 후보는 모두 5명이었다. 이들을 포함해 6명의 후보가 난립하면서 야권연대 후보가 당선됐다.

　출발은 순탄치 않았다. 그는 야 4당 단일 후보라는 걸 강조했으나 민주당의 전폭적인 지원을 받지는 못했다. 지난 17일 순천에서 열린 야 4당 공동유세엔 민주당에서 정동영 최고위원만 모습을 드러냈다. 일부 민주당 의원은 무소속 후보의 선거사무소를 비공식 방문해 야권연대가 깨지는 게 아니냐는 우려가 제기되기도 했다. 여기에 민주당 순천 지역 당원들은 일부 민주당을 탈당한 무소속 후보를 지지해 ‘무늬만 무공천’이란 말도 나왔다.

　하지만 23일 박지원 원내대표와 민주노동당 이정희 대표, 창조한국당 공성경 대표, 이병완 국민참여당 상임고문 등이 참석한 가운데 공동 지지유세를 벌여 야권 연대를 공고히 한 게 분위기 반전의 계기가 됐다. 앞서 22일에는 민주당 천정배 최고위원과 한명숙 전 총리가 김 후보와 공동 유세를 나서 힘을 실어 줬다. 김 당선인은 “연대·상생·통합을 통해 서민경제를 살리고 남북 간의 화해·협력을 이끌어 내는 데 밀알이 되겠다”고 했다. 전남 고흥 출신인 김 후보는 고려대 물리학과를 다닐 때 미문화원 점거 농성을 벌이다 제적됐다. 2006년엔 민노당 사무총장을 지냈다.

　민노당 후보의 당선으로 야권연대는 더욱 공고해질 것으로 보인다. 민주당 손학규 대표는 당내 반발 속에서도 ‘통 큰 연대’라는 말로 순천 무공천론을 밀어붙였다. 이에 따라 내년 총선·대선의 야권연합에선 ‘통 크게’ 판이 짜일 것이란 전망도 나온다. 민노당 이정희 대표는 “ 2012년에 새로운 변화를 이끌 원동력을 만들어 냈다”고 말했다.
