Choo Shin-soo arrested

SEOUL - Cleveland Indians outfielder Choo Shin-soo, the only South Korean in Major League Baseball this season, has been charged with drunken driving in Ohio, according to his club on Tuesday.

Choo, 28, was arrested early Monday in Sheffield Lake, Ohio, according to the Indians. He is the sixth major leaguer to be charged with drunken driving this year.

Choo apologized to his fans, the team and his family for “the attention stemming from this matter.”

“I am hopeful that this incident will not be a distraction to the Indians organization while we remain focused on continuing to play winning baseball,” he said in a statement released by the Indians.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer, a local newspaper, reported that Choo was stopped on a local road at 2:25 a.m. when a police officer saw his vehicle weaving on the road.

David Graves, law director in Sheffield Lake, was quoted as saying that the officer “smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath.”

“He performed a field sobriety test and was taken back to the police test,” Graves said. “Police said he also failed a breathalyzer test, registering a .20 [more than twice the legal limit of .08].”

According to Graves, Choo was released on his own recognizance after being charged. Graves said the same police officer had talked to the ball player earlier in the evening, when Choo had stopped his car and told the officer he was trying to find his way home as his navigation device was not functioning.

The officer followed Choo and pulled him over when Choo’s car started weaving.

The team said Choo would be in the lineup to open a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics Wednesday, Korean time.

미국 프로야구 클리블랜드 인디언스의 추신수(29·사진)가 음주운전으로 경찰에 입건됐다가 풀려났다.

미국 프로야구(MLB) 공식 홈페이지는 ‘추신수가 지난 2일 새벽(현지시간) 오하이오주의 셰필드레이크에서 술을 마시고 운전한 혐의로 현지 경찰에 입건됐다’고 4일 밝혔다. 적발 당시 추신수의 혈중 알코올 농도는 0.201％로 오하이오주 법정 기준치 0.08％를 두 배 넘게 초과했다고 현지 언론이 보도했다.

경찰 보고서에 따르면 추신수는 이날 새벽 자신의 흰색 캐딜락 차량 안에서 경찰관에게 집으로 가는 길을 묻다가 음주운전 사실이 적발됐다. 처음엔 술 냄새를 맡지 못했던 경찰은 길을 알려주고 추신수가 방향을 잃지 않도록 뒤에서 따라갔다. 그러나 추신수의 차가 차선을 계속 넘나들고 중앙선을 두 차례나 침범하자 경찰은 곧바로 정지명령을 내렸다. 그때야 경찰은 추신수가 술에 취한 사실을 알아챘다. 경찰은 추신수를 차에서 내리게 한 뒤 똑바로 걷도록 하는 테스트를 했고, 몸 중심을 잡지 못하자 혈중 알코올 농도를 측정했다. 경찰에 입건돼 조사를 받고 풀려난 추신수는 조만간 법원에 출두해 재판을 받을 것으로 알려졌다.

클리블랜드 구단은 “우리는 이번 사건을 매우 심각하게 받아들이고 있다. 실망했다”고 성명을 발표했다. 구단의 징계 방안 등에 대해서는 언급하지 않았다. 추신수는 구단을 통해 “가족과 동료, 팬들, 그리고 구단에 심려를 끼쳐 죄송하다. 이번 일로 팀이 경기력에 영향을 받지 않았으면 좋겠다”며 “사법 절차에 따라 가능한 한 빨리 문제가 해결되기를 희망한다”고 말했다.
