North denies hacking into Nonghyup servers

North Korea said yesterday that the South Korean prosecutors’ claim that Pyongyang hackers were behind the damage done to Nonghyup Bank’s servers is a “fabrication like the Cheonan incident.”

The statement from North Korea’s official news agency came a week after the prosecutors in Seoul said North Korea was likely to have been the perpetrators behind the Nonghyup hacking.

On April 12, the electronic banking system of the National Agricultural Cooperatives Federation (Nonghyup), Korea’s main agricultural cooperative, was hit by a cyberattack that shut it down, leaving 30 million account holders without access to their accounts for several days.

“The accusation against the North is a fabrication like the sinking of the warship Cheonan based on cock-and-bull grounds and silly nonsense,” said a statement from the North’s Defense Ministry cited by the Korean Central News Agency. The statement was entitled, “Evil habits of accusing others must be thrown away.”

The statement went on to say that cyberattacks were a “special form of warfare designed by the United States to attack an opponent without showing oneself.”

“Even if the puppet group asked the higher officials in the United States [about this incident], the U.S. would have reprimanded the South for being clueless on even the basic facts of cyberwarfare,” the statement said.

The North also reported that people in the South, including bank customers affected by the Nonghyup hacking and unnamed experts, were questioning the conclusions of the prosecutors.

It went on to accuse the South Korean government of coming up with the “Nonghyup rumor” to distract citizens after the ruling Grand National Party performed badly in by-elections on April 27.

“The puppet group should throw away its evil habits of blaming others,” the report said.

In April, the South Korean police said the North was also behind a three-day distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that crippled 40 Web sites run by the government and private businesses in March.

농협 해킹이 북한 소행이라는 검찰 수사결과에 북한이 "천안호 사건과 같은 날조극"이라며 맹비난했다.

서울중앙지검이 지난 3일 농협 해킹의 주범으로 북한 정찰총국을 지목하는 수사결과를 발표한 뒤 일주일 만에 북한이 내놓은 반응이다.

북한은 그동안 디도스(DDos.분산서비스거부) 공격이나 각종 해킹사건과 관련해 우리 관계당국이 '北 소행'이라는 조사결과를 내놓아도 공식적인 반응이나 입장을 내놓지 않았다.

10일 조선중앙통신에 따르면 북한 국방위원회 인민무력부는 '남을 걸고드는 악습을 버려야 한다'는 제목의 대변인 담화를 통해 "'북의 소행설'은 황당무계한 근거와 그에 바탕을 둔 허황한 주장이며 천안호 침몰사건과 같은 날조극"이라고 주장했다.

담화는 "원래 사이버전은 주로 자기를 노출하지 않고 상대를 공격하기 위해 미국이 고안해낸 특수한 형태의 침략전쟁 방식"이라며 "농협 당사자들도 북의 소행이라는 발표가 섣부른 결론이라고 항변하고 괴뢰군 기무사마저 북의 공격으로 밀어붙일 수 없다고 하며 전문가들도 의문을 던지고 있다"고 주장했다.

이어 "역적패당은 '북의 소행설'을 퍼뜨려 뿌리째 흔들리고 있는 반공화국 대결정책을 유지하고 4·27보선을 전후해 여지없이 드러난 집권말기 위기를 수습하며 민족적 화해와 단합을 파탄시킨 책임에서 벗어나보려고 획책하고 있다"고 비난했다.

담화는 "역적패당은 남을 걸고드는 체질화된 악습을 버려야 하며 전면붕괴에 직면한 제 집안 처지도 모르고 그 누구의 '급변사태'를 바라며 벌이는 전쟁연습 소동이나 걷어치워야 한다"고 덧붙였다.

서울중앙지검은 지난해 7월7일과 올해 3월4일 한국에서 발생한 디도스 공격도 북한이 주도했다고 발표했으나 당시 북한은 아무런 반응을 보이지 않았다.

그러나 북한은 올해 초 대남선전 웹사이트인 '우리민족끼리'가 해킹당해 김정일 부자를 비난하는 문구와 그림이 게시되자 해당 사이트를 복구한 뒤 "지난 시기 남조선에서 디도스 공격을 비롯한 사이버 공격이 빈발하자 남조선 극우보수세력은 그것이 마치 우리의 소행인 것처럼 진상을 오도했다"고 비난했다.
