Korea convinces with 3-1 win

Kim Tae-hwan and Yoon Bitgaram’s impressive second-half performances gave Korea a 3-1 victory over Jordan in the first leg of its second round Olympic Asia Qualifier at Seoul World Cup Stadium yesterday.

Led by head coach Hong Myung-bo, the Korean U-23 team surrendered the opening goal to Jordan at the end of the first half, but it was Kim and Yoon who turned the game around in the second half and gave Korea the win against the Middle Eastern country.

Kim scored the equalizing goal in the 55th minute and earned a penalty kick in the 75th minute. Yoon converted the penalty and it was his free kick in the 85th minute that Kim Dong-sub headed in to confirm victory for Korea.

“I knew the first match is always tough but it was a really difficult match,” Yoon said to Yonhap News Agency in a post match interview. “However, I am happy that we made a comeback after giving away a goal.”

With more than 35,000 fans in attendance, Korea started the game with in a 4-2-3-1 formation, putting Soongsil University player Bae Chun-suk up front and Chunnam prodigy Ji Dong-won as a support striker.

The team’s first shot of the game came when center back Hong Jeong-ho headed from Yoon’s corner kick in the 11th minute.

Hong Myung-bo made a change in the 40th minute to try and break the deadlock by replacing striker Bae with Gwangju striker Kim Dong-sub, but it was Jordan who took the lead.

Mahmoud Saleem Mahmoud Za’tara intercepted a pass from Korea captain and Jeju United defender Hong Jeong-ho before beating Kim Young-kwon and sliding the ball into the Korean net in first-half stoppage time. However Kim Tae-hwan and Yoon Bitgaram were on hand to save Korea from defeat.

Kim, who started the game as a right winger, scored the equalizer in the 54th minute. The 22-year-old scored after picking up a loose ball in the box after Yun Suk-young’s cross hit Ji Dong-won’s leg.

Kim played a vital part in the second goal too when he won a penalty from Jordan goalkeeper Feras Emad Saleh Salem in the 75th minute after receiving a pass from Moon Ki-han.

Gyeongnam midfielder Yoon stepped up and the 21-year-old calmly put the ball into Jordan’s net to make it 2-1. Ten minutes later his free kick was headed in by first-half substitute Kim Dong-sub to seal the 3-1 victory.

After the match, coach Hong admitted that there was a mistake in the defensive line, but he said it still felt good that his team got the win.

“I thought we would have more chances to score and it feels bad that we didn’t,” Hong said at the post game press conference. “However, a victory is a victory and I am happy we won 3-1.”

Korea will play the second leg in Amman, the capital city of Jordan, on Thursday. The team left late last night to adjust to the high altitude of the venue. The U-23 team is scheduled to return Korea on Saturday.

김태환(22·FC서울)이 위기에 빠졌던 홍명보팀을 구해냈다.

김태환은 19일 열린 요르단전에서 0-1로 뒤진 후반 10분 동점골을 성공시켰다. 윤석영이 왼쪽 측면에서 올린 공이 문전에 있던 지동원의 가랑이 사이로 흘렀고, 달려들던 김태환이 왼발을 갖다대 골망을 흔들었다. 결승골에도 결정적인 역할을 했다.

후반 31분 문기한이 수비수 사이로 스루패스를 찔러줬고 김태환이 드리블 돌파하다 수비수 발에 걸려 넘어져 페널티킥을 얻어냈다. 윤빛가람이 페널티킥을 침착하게 오른발로 밀어넣으며 경기를 역전시켰다.

김태환은 지난 1일 오만과의 평가전을 앞두고 올림픽 대표팀에 첫 소집됐다. 김태환은 오만전에서 후반 교체 투입돼 2도움을 올리며 혜성처럼 등장했다. 오른발 크로스와 순간적인 드리블 돌파로 수비를 무너트리는 능력이 장점이다. 홍명보팀은 구자철(볼프스부르크) 김보경(세레소 오사카)이 소속팀 사정상 차출되지 못한데다 조영철(니가타)마저 부상으로 경기에 나서지 못했다. 측면을 맡을 자원이 없자 결국 홍 감독은 김태환을 대체 자원으로 신임할 수 밖에 없었다.

오른쪽 측면 미드필더로 출전한 김태환은 전반부터 활발히 움직였다. 그러나 패스를 주고 받을 사람이 없어 드리블 위주로 경기를 풀어나갔다. 빠른 스피를 앞세운 돌파가 돋보였지만 크로스까지 연결되지는 못했다. 오른쪽 측면이 활로를 찾지 못하자 대표팀의 공격은 전반전 내내 답답하고 단조로웠다.

그러나 후반 들어 팀이 확 달라졌다. 중앙 공격을 고집하던 대표팀은 측면에서 실마리를 풀어갔다. 김태환이 동점골을 만들어내자 견고하던 중앙 수비도 헐거워지기 시작했다. 김태환은 측면 뿐만 아니라 중앙으로도 적극적으로 파고 들었다. 페널티킥 결승골도 김태환의 중앙 돌파로부터 비롯됐다.

경기 종료 5분 여를 남기고 홍철과 교체된 김태환은 관중들의 뜨거운 박수를 받으며 벤치로 들어왔다. 홍명보 감독은 벤치로 들어온 김태환을 껴안으며 어깨를 두드려줬다.

김태환은 지난해 FC서울에서 프로 데뷔해 19경기 3도움을 기록했고 올해는 10경기에 나섰다. 주로 선발이 아닌 교체로 투입돼 조커 역할을 맡았지만 공격포인트는 없었다. 컨디션을 조절하기 쉽지 않은 상황이었지만 홍명보팀의 든든한 오른쪽 자원으로 존재감을 알렸다.

김태환은 경기 후 "왼발슛은 기대도 하지 않았는데 들어가서 깜짝 놀랐다. 전반 경기가 잘 풀리지 않았지만 후반 동점골이 터지면서 선수들끼리 호흡이 맞아나갔다"고 말했다. 경기 후 라커룸을 찾은 최용수 FC서울 감독은 "이제 팀에서 골을 넣으면 되겠네"라며 김태환을 격려했다.
