It’s official: Koreans won’t see Coldplay at the 3rd Jisan Valley Rock Festival in July.

Korean fans have long waited for a visit from the band, and the news earlier this year was that it was finally going to make the trip. The anticipation was heightened by the fact that the band had booked gigs at the neighboring Fuji Rock Festival, which will be held during the same period as Jisan.

But the latest announcement of Jisan’s lineup last Wednesday did not include the band and a spokeswoman with CJ E&M, the festival organizer, confirmed they won’t be coming here.

Instead, the festival will have The Chemical Brothers, a British electronic music duo formed in 1991, as its headliner, and a host of indie bands that are not yet as well known here.

The festival hosted a number of big names in its first two years. Legendary English rock band Oasis was the headliner in 2009. Last year, the English rock band Muse was the main act and there were also performances by the globally-recognized trip hop and dance duos Massive Attack and the Petshop Boys. Last year’s three-day festival attracted an audience of 80,000.

“It’s true that we had superstars here last year and the year before. This time, however, we aim to give the audience the pleasure of seeing bands that are currently hot overseas but have yet to become famous here,” said Lee Jae-hyang, a spokeswoman with CJ E&M. “The Arctic Monkeys and Suede are just two examples.”

Other participating bands from abroad include Incubus, Priscilla Ahn, Jimmy Eat World and Envy. There will also be several Korean bands, including Dear Cloud and Huckleberry Finn.

There is also a new program called Hype Stage that starts after midnight and features performances by domestic and foreign artists in genres ranging from hip hop to R&B, reggae and electronica.

Kim Wan-sun, a dancing queen who was dubbed the Madonna of Korea in the 1990s, will be showcasing her latest single, “Super Love” there.

The situation at Jisan is similar to that at the older yet smaller Pentaport Rock Festival, to be held at Dream Park in Incheon the weekend following Jisan. With Korn, an American rock band that began in 1993, as its headliner, the festival will feature overseas musicians including The Ting Tings, an English indie dance duo; the Plain White T’s, a 14-year-old American rock band; Mamas Gun, a London-based soul funk band formed in 2008; and Neon Tree, a six-year-old American alternative rock band.

The program also includes bands from the Korean music scene - No Brain, one of the oldest Korean funk bands, and Garion, a 14-year-old hip-hop band.

The launch of the airport railroad late last year is likely to facilitate the commute from Seoul to Dream Park. The trip takes only 25.5 minutes from Hongik University Station on subway line No. 2 to Geomam Station, the closest station to Dream Park, and 32.5 minutes from Seoul Station on subway line No. 1 and 4. A shuttle bus will depart every 20 to 30 minutes from Geomam Station to the park and the trip takes around 10 minutes, according to the organizer.
