3 mines found swept away from North

The South Korean military said yesterday that they found three North Korean land mines, which apparently were dislodged during the recent torrential rain. One mine was found on Gyodong Island, one on Bolum Island in Incheon, and the other in Suip Creek in Yanggu District in Gangwon. The mines were in the shape of wooden boxes.

The military warned that additional land mines might be in rivers and streams linked to North Korea. A military spokesman said that they will continue to search in areas where land mines could be found.

The military will put up warning posters and messages to inform the public about land mines in Paju and Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi, and border areas in Gangwon.

Last August, 11 North Korean mines, which were carried away during torrential rains, were found near the Imjin River. One civilian was killed and another person was injured in that case. After the accident, the military found 193 additional land mines. At the time, Kaesong, a North Korean city bordering Gyeonggi, had experienced unusually heavy rain.

The military spokesman said that if a land mine is found, the police or military should be contacted.

The box type land mine, whose shape looks like a tissue box, is designed to explode when the cover is opened or a certain amount of pressure is placed on it.

軍, 北목함지뢰 3발 발견…주의 당부

군 당국은 28일 집중호우로 인해 최근 북한에서 유실된 목함지뢰 3발이 발견됐다며 각별한 주의를 당부했다.

이붕우 합동참모본부 공보실장은 정례브리핑에서 "본격적인 장마철에 앞서 탐문한 결과 6월 강원도 양구군 수입천과 인천 강화군 교동도, 볼음도에서 목함지뢰 3발을 발견해 처리했다"고 밝혔다.

이 실장은 "양구군에서 발견된 지뢰는 빈 상자였으나 나머지 두 상자 안에는 지뢰가 들어 있었다"고 말했다.

목함지뢰는 가로 20㎝, 세로 9㎝, 높이 4㎝의 나무 상자 안에 200ｇ의 폭약과 기폭장치가 설치돼 있는 것이다. 상자를 열거나 일정한 압력을 가하면 폭발한다.

살상반경은 2ｍ로 알려져 있으며 최근에는 나무 대신 플라스틱으로 만들어지는 경우도 있다고 합참 은 설명했다.

이로 인해 지난해에는 민간인 1명이 숨지고 1명이 중상을 당했다. 지난해 8월 강화도에서 목함지뢰가 처음 발견된 것을 비롯해 모두 193발을 군에서 탐색, 수거한 바 있다.

합참 예하 각 부대는 장마기 집중호우 이후에도 지뢰 유실가능 지역과 해안선을 대상으로 목함지뢰 수색활동을 실시할 계획이다.

특히 경기 파주와 연천, 강화군, 강원도 접경지역을 중심으로 홍보를 강화할 예정이다. 관공서와 협조해 주민반상회보와 옥외전광판, 포스터 등을 통해 북한 목함지뢰의 위험과 식별요령, 발견시 행동요령에 대해 알리기로 했다.

합참 관계자는 "목함지뢰의 경우 물에 잘 뜨고 겉보기에 폭발물로 보이지 않아 호기심에 건드릴 위험이 있다"면서 "나무나 플라스틱 상자 모양의 물체를 발견하면 절대 건드리지 말고 주변에 위험표식을 한 뒤 곧바로 가까운 경찰서나 군부대에 신고해달라"고 말했다.
