Japanese rocker dies after trying to hang himself in jail
Rocker Taiji Sawada, best known as the former bass player with heavy metal group “X,” died on Sunday when medics at a Saipan hospital turned off his life support, the Saipan Tribune reported.
Another local newspaper reported that Sawada, 45, had been in intensive care since July 14 after he tried to hang himself with a bedsheet in a jail in the U.S.-administered territory.
He had been arrested three days before for allegedly assaulting a female cabin-crew attendant during a Delta Airlines flight from Tokyo to Saipan, court documents showed.
The documents said the flight attendant went to the business class section after hearing banging and found Sawada struggling with a female passenger. The crew member said passengers helped her subdue and move the musician to another chair, but he caused another commotion, punching windows and kicking seats, as the plane prepared to descend to Saipan.
Eventually, the captain ordered Sawada to be placed in restraints and he was arrested after the flight landed, the court documents said. No reason was given for Sawada’s behavior.
Sawada enjoyed success with “X” in the late 1980s but left in 1992 and since then had played in other bands, according to fan Web sites.

1980~90년대 한국과 일본에서 뜨거운 인기를 누렸던 일본 록그룹 ‘엑스재팬’의 멤버 타이지(본명 사와다 다이지·45·사진)가 17일 사이판에서 숨졌다.
일본 언론에 따르면 타이지는 11일 사이판행 델타항공에서 다른 승객과 시비가 붙어 난동을 피우다 제지하는 승무원을 폭행했다. 그는 비행기 창과 좌석을 발로 차는 등 행패를 부리다 사이판 공항에 도착 직후 현지 경찰에 체포됐다. 현지 법원의 심리를 하루 앞둔 14일 타이지는 구치소의 침대 시트로 목을 매 자살을 시도, 병원으로 이송됐으나 17일 세상을 떠났다.
타이지는 86년 결성된 엑스(엑스재팬의 전신)의 원년멤버다. 화려한 베이스 연주와 외모로 사랑받았던 그는 92년 엑스재팬을 탈퇴한 후에도 ‘라우드니스’ 등 밴드 활동을 계속해왔다.
지난해 8월엔 요코하마에서 열린 엑스재팬 콘서트에 참가, 18년 만에 옛 멤버들과 호흡을 맞췄다. 그는 공연 후 자신의 블로그를 통해 “록의 세계에 기록될 만한 경험을 할 수 있어 영광이다. 멤버들의 무한한 사랑이 있었기에 그 자리에 함께 할 수 있었다”며 재기를 다짐했었다.
엑스재팬의 멤버였던 히데(마쓰모토 히데토·당시 34세)가 98년 자택에서 목을 매 숨진 채 발견 돼 당시 파장이 컸다.
