Lotte’s Lee losing focus due to talk of transfer

Lotte Giants slugger Lee Dae-ho said rumors that he may be heading overseas to Japan’s Nippon Baseball League (NPB) are stressing him out and could have a detrimental affect on his performance as the Korean league heads deeper into the second half of the season.

Lee, 29, has been the talk of the town among Japanese sports media in recent months. Sport Nippon reported last Tuesday that he is on the wanted list by at least five Japanese clubs, namely Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, Hanshin Tigers, Chiba Lotte Marines and two teams from the NPB’s Central League.

However, in a recent interview with the JoongAng Ilbo’s daily sports newspaper Ilgan Sports, Lee said the rumor mill is grinding him down and he would prefer to escape the spotlight to help the Giants get to the post season.

“It’s crunch time for the team as to whether we make the post-season,” Lee said. “[The rumors] aren’t doing anything to help.”

Most recently, Japanese media reported that Tokyo’s Yomiuri Giants has sent scouts to check out the formidable first baseman. But Lee said he does not even plan to meet them.

“I feel exhausted when I see these reports,” he said.

“I have never said ‘I want to go to this or that club,’ because making those kind of comments is a discourtesy to Giants fans.”

Lee, who topped seven batting categories in the KBO last season, currently leads in home runs (22), hits (119), RBI (77) and slugging percentage (.578).

Meanwhile, he has already set a number of milestones in his career, including helping Korea win the baseball gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games.

He will be a free agent after this season, but says the media speculation is already going into overdrive.

“I know many people are interested in me playing overseas, and some are reporting that I’m on the verge of signing [with other teams],” he said.

“When the current season is over and the time comes, I will personally make whatever announcements need to be made.”

Lee said he is not trying to exploit his upcoming free agent status for astronomical returns, and that the middle of the season is hardly a suitable time to discuss financial issues.

“So far, I haven’t thought about how much I should get paid,” Lee said. “[If I move,] it will be to play baseball, not for the money.”

Family considerations may also play a role as Lee’s wife is already five months pregnant.

“I just hope my baby will be in good health,” said Lee.

롯데 이대호 “이적 이야기 서운하다”

이대호(29·롯데)가 일본 구단 이적과 관련한 소문으로 몸살을 앓고 있다. 최근 일본 요미우리 스카우트가 롯데 경기를 관전했다고 알려지면서 국내 야구계 인사와 언론들도 본격적으로 그의 이적과 관련한 예상과 추측들을 쏟아내고 있다.

그는 "팀이 우승을 향해 뛰어야 할 시간이다. 몸값이나 이적과 관련한 소문들로 지친다"고 토로했다. 양승호 롯데 감독은 "자기 일이 아니면 주변에서 말을 아껴주길 바란다. 더구나 시즌 중이다. 이대호도 마음고생이 있을 것이다. 이겨내길 바란다"고 말했다.

-요미우리 등 최근 일본 구단 이적이야기가 많다.

"당사자와 팀은 가만히 있는데 이적 관련 이야기가 지나치게 많이 흘러나온다. (아쉬운 듯) 지금 팀이 시즌중인데 그런 말들이 나오는 것 자체가 안타깝다."

-스트레스 받나.

"그렇다. 스트레스로 작용한다. 롯데가 4강 안에 안착할 수 있느냐 없느냐 결정짓는 중요한 상황이다. 도움 안 된다. 페넌트레이스 중에는 팀 성적과 야구에 신경 쓰는 것이 맞다. 포스트시즌 진출과 우승 외에 다른 것들은 생각 안 한다. 이런 말들이 자꾸 나오면 스트레스 받는 것이 당연하다."

-최근 요미우리서 이대호를 보기 위해 스카우트를 파견했는데.

"언론 등을 통해 읽었다. 스카우트가 반드시 나를 보러왔다고 단언할 수 있을까. 한국 야구를 보러 왔을 수도, 다른 선수를 보러 왔을 수 있다. '수비를 보러왔다' 등의 기사도 읽었다. 차라리 도루 보러 왔다고 하지 그런가. (이런 내용들이 번번이 입에 오르내려) 지친다."

-스카우트를 직접 만난 적이 있나.

"직접 만난 적 없다. 무엇보다 '내가 어느 구단에 가고 싶다'등 향후 거취에 관한 말을 한 적도 없다. 이런 이야기 자체가 롯데 팬에게 실례다."

-이적 관련한 입장 표명은 언제쯤이 적당한가.

"나의 해외 진출에 많은 사람들이 관심을 쏟고 있다. FA시즌을 앞두고 있고, 이해한다. 요즘 언론 관계자들은 내가 마치 계약을 앞에 둔 듯 말한다. 시즌 후 때가 된다면 스스로 밝힐 것이다."

-일부에서는 '이대호가 80억 가까이 받으려고 할 것'이라는 등 구체적인 몸값도 예측하고 있다.

"솔직히 서운하다. 몸값은 (영입할) 구단서 알아서 판단할 일이지, 주변에서 언급할 사항이 아니다. 스카우트가 국·내외 현황을 누구보다 잘 알지 않겠나. '돈'이 목적이 아니다. (만약 이적한다면) 나에 대한 가치를 대우해주는 팀에 가겠지만, 시즌 중에 금액 부분을 밝히는 것도 상황에 맞지 않다."

-돈은 크게 상관없다는 말인가.

"아직 '얼마 받고 싶다'는 등의 생각을 하지 않았다. 나는 야구를 하러 가지, 돈을 따라 가는 것이 아니다. 야구계 어른들의 평가나 조언 의미를 모르는 것은 아니다. 다만, 몸값은 나를 판단하는 대우고 가치다. 야구 선수는 누구나 더 큰 곳에서 내 실력을 키우고 떨치려고 한다. 야구할 생각 없이 돈 벌러 해외 진출하는 선수가 얼마나 있겠나."

-요즘 관심사는 무엇인가.

"오직 두 가지다. 뱃속에 있는 우리 아기가 건강하고 예쁘게 자라주길 기도하는 것(이대호의 아내 신혜정씨는 현재 임신 5개월째 접어들었다). 그리고 팀이 4강에 올라가 우승하는 것뿐이다."
