MBC regrets errors in 2008 mad cow report

Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) voluntarily apologized Monday night for a 2008 report that contained false information about mad cow disease.

The report fueled demonstrations in the streets of Seoul and other cities against U.S. beef imports, which evolved into months of massive antigovernment, anti-U.S. protests with violent clashes between police and protesters.

On Friday, the Supreme Court acquitted five staffers from MBC’s PD Diary program of defamation, although it acknowledged that the report had false information.

The apology was read by an anchor before MBC’s main news program at 9 p.m. yesterday. The entire statement was subtitled on the screen as the anchor read it.

It said: “Although the Supreme Court acquitted five MBC staffers of charges that their mad cow disease episode on PD Diary had defamed government officials who reopened the domestic market to U.S. beef, we still felt responsible for airing false information that clouded the nation’s judgment on an important policy.”

At the end of the apology, the network promised to review its internal production guidelines.

The Korea Communications Standards Commission ordered MBC to apology to viewers in May 2008.

PD수첩 광우병 보도…MBC ＂책임 통감” 사과

“핵심 쟁점 허위 … 갈등 야기”

MBC가 2008년 ‘PD수첩’의 광우병 보도에 대해 5일 사과했다.

　MBC는 이날 오후 9시 ‘뉴스데스크’ 첫 뉴스에서 “국민에게 사과드린다. 대법원이 형사상 명예훼손에 대해서는 무죄 판결을 내렸지만 보도의 주요 내용은 허위라고 판시해 진실 보도를 생명으로 하는 언론사로서 책임을 통감하고 있다”는 사과 방송을 내보냈다.

　MBC는 “기획 의도가 아무리 정당하다고 해도 프로그램을 지탱하는 핵심 쟁점들이 허위 사실이었다면, 그 프로그램은 공정성과 객관성은 물론 정당성도 상실하게 된다”며 “2008년 미국산 쇠고기 수입 협상 논란과 광우병이 전 국민의 주요 관심사였던 시점에 잘못된 정보를 제공한 것은 어떤 이유로도 합리화될 수 없고, 당시 문화방송의 잘못된 정보가 국민의 정확한 판단을 흐리게 해 혼란과 갈등을 야기했다는 지적도 겸허하게 받아들인다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “취재 과정에서 드러난 문제점을 점검하고 바로잡겠다”며 향후 취재 제작 가이드 라인 준수, 내부 시스템 재점검 등을 약속했다.

　 광우병과 관련한 MBC의 사과는 ‘PD수첩’ 보도 106일 만인 2008년 8월 12일 방송통신심의위원회의 ‘시청자 사과 명령’에 따른 방송 이후 처음이다.
